Olmert cannot remain in the prime minister's office ("Bibi, Bibi...")
Haaretz.com ^ | 8/8/2006 | Ari Shavit

Ehud Olmert may decide to accept the French proposal for a cease-fire and unconditional surrender to Hezbollah. That is his privilege. Olmert is a prime minister whom journalists invented, journalists protected, and whose rule journalists preserved. Now the journalists are saying run away. That's legitimate. Unwise, but legitimate.

However, one thing should be clear: If Olmert runs away now from the war he initiated, he will not be able to remain prime minister for even one more day. Chutzpah has its limits. You cannot lead an entire nation to war promising victory, produce humiliating defeat and remain in power. You cannot bury 120 Israelis in cemeteries, keep a million Israelis in shelters for a month, wear down deterrent power, bring the next war very close, and then say - oops, I made a mistake. That was not the intention. Pass me a cigar, please.

This UN resolution is going to prove to be a disaster for Israel and the US. What a shame.

Commentators on FoxNews, including Col. Hunt, are assessing this cease-fire as win for Hizbulla and a defeat for Olmert.

Col. Hunt said the only thing the Israelis have won in this current war is more body bags.

How quickly can they get him out of there and replace him with a war cabinet?

Still, until they find someone to sign on to the agreement on behalf of Hezbollah, everything the IDF continues to do will be strictly defensive.

What would you have Israel do?

The terrorists blend into the civilian population. The IDF can destroy infrastructure, but that can be rebuilt.

The Israelis being a bunch of left wing socialists don't have the will to win.

I did a search but nothing turned up.

I posted this because it was being discussed on Fox a few minutes ago and because the question of Olmert's continuation is under new threat by virtue of his agreeing to this ceasefire.

Oh bull...it's not totally his decision...there's a whole group of other Israeli Officials that have to give the approval...that's obviously what's been done.....

Many Americans have long decided that Bibi should rule Israel. Wonder why the Israelis don`t seem to agree?

They don't have a choice. Win or die.

I'm confused. A little while ago we were hearing that the U.N. deal allowed for a massive Israeli offensive. Now we're hearing it doesn't?

Wonder how the Israeli system allows for elections/removal from office. Yes, indeed Netanyahu is the exact man for that nation right now.

Sure, if defensive means Killing every last Hezbollah, then
thats the definition of the word..continue to "defend"

Amen to all of it. I had misgivings about this guy from day 1. To me it would be like having Warren Christopher as president of the US during these times.

Wonder how the Israeli system allows for elections/removal from office.

IIRC, the opposition would call for a vote of no confidence and if Olmert loses, the Knesset calls for a new general election.

Just moments ago the UN advised Israel that the cease-fire begins right after they vote not on Sunday as Israel wanted. Olmert will be history after this debacle.
