Day of terror strikes was planned for August 16
Daily Mail ^ | 8/11/2006

Terrorists were planning to unleash a series of deadly mid-air explosions on flights between London and America on August 16, it has been revealed today.

Members of the terror group, who were arrested in a series of raids by anti-terror police yesterday, were due to mount a dry run today to check if they could smuggle components for liquid explosives through Britain's airports.

United Airline tickets dated next Wednesday were found by police at the home of one of the raided addresses.

One US intelligence official told today's Evening Standard: "The bombers were a couple of days from a test, and a few days from doing it."

The airlines targeted were United, American and Continental, which fly to New York, Washington and California.

Today the Bank of England named and froze the assets of 19 of the 24 air terror suspects arrested. The bank was acting under the instruction of Chancellor Gordon Brown and on the advice of the police and security services.

It acted under powers granted by the United Nations to tackle the financing of terrorism in the wake of the September 11 2001 attacks. Its action means it is a crime to make their money available without a licence from the Treasury.

The oldest of the named suspects is 35 and the youngest 17. Thirteen of them are from east London - nine from Walthamstow, one from Chingford, one from Leyton, one from the Limehouse and Poplar area and one from Clapton.

Four are from High Wycombe, Buckinghamshire, and the other two are from Birmingham and Stoke Newington, north London.

The imam of Walthamstow mosque, where many of the suspects live, urged the Muslim community to remain calm and assist the police in their inquries. The unnamed imam added: "We'd like to remind people that the suspects are innocent until proven guilty."

Meanwhile, a senior Pakistani government official said today that two British nationals arrested in Pakistan provided information about the alleged UK air terror plot.

The UK remains on a "critical" level of alert against terrorism and air passengers at UK airports are expected to face widespread disruption again today following the introduction of new anti-terrorism measures yesterday including a ban on hand luggage.

The plot, which was described as an attempt to commit "mass murder on an unimaginable scale" by blowing up passenger jet, may have been thwarted just days before it was due to be carried out.

I, too, will be flying into National on the 16th!

My wife is in freak-out mode, but I've been telling her that it is actually probably safer now that they have found a plot than it would have been otherwise!

It wasn't. That's why the red alert. It's unclear as of yet how many haven't been arrested yet that may try to complete their mission in the next week or two. The heightened security is to dissuade them from that, and, hopefully, to roll up the rest of the network.

I thought this whole incident was being portrayed as a big win by the western intelligence communities.

The British contingent of these creeps had been under surveillance since March. British intelligence knew they were up to something, but had little idea what, or when.

When the Pakistanis arrested the bigwig, more information developed as to what, and the timeframe, which would have given British intel about a week heads-up. Then US intel intercepted a "go now" message, which made things tighter on the arrest cycle. It was both good intel, and some luck, and was a real close call...

I do not know how security staff could deal with this. They can't tear apart every baby's diaper and test the gel inside, and surely aren't going to open every stinky wet diaper...

No, but what they can do is provide 1 fresh diaper for every infant flying and make the parent/caregiver change them in the presence of security staff. This has been standard practice in prisons for many years.

I'm a little in freak out mode as well. My son is flying Continental from Cali into Houston on Monday.

I don't trust the airport screeners, and I'll tell you why. When my son came home a few months ago, his dad planned a big fishing trip. So my son got out his huge, fold-down Gerber hunting knife to bring. After packing, he flew to Ohio for a tournament he was in, then flew into Houston.

After he got home, he was so upset because he thought someone at the hotel in Ohio stole his knife from his suitcase.

When it was time for him to fly back to Cali, we decided to walk upstairs and watch him go through security. He didn't know we had stayed. It was a good thing we did because they pulled him out of line and took him and his backpack over to a table. They looked upset and they were grilling him. I couldn't figure out what they could have been so mad about until they opened his travel case (toothpaste, shaver, shampoo, etc...) and pulled the knife out of a little zip-up compartment. The security guy opens the knife and has this shocked look on his face, as does my son.

I ran downstairs and called a security officer over and told her he is my son. I told them that he thought someone had stole it at the hotel and they let me take it with me. They were shocked that he got through security in California and Ohio with it in a carry-on bag.

So much for feeling safe.

From a recently received email:

The Red Planet is about to be spectacular!
This month and next, Earth is catching up with Mars in an encounter that
will culminate in the closest approach between the two planets in
recorded history. The next time Mars may come this close is
in 2287. Due to the way Jupiter's gravity tugs on
Mars and perturbs its orbit, astronomers can only be
certain that Mars has not come this close to Earth
in the Last 5,000 years, but it may be as long as
60,000 years before it happens again.

The encounter will culminate on August 27th when
Mars comes to within 34,649,589 miles of Earth and
will be (next to the moon) the brightest object in
the night sky. It will attain a magnitude of -2.9
and will appear 25.11 arc seconds wide. At a modest
75-power magnification...

Do you remember this?

Looked on the map to be New York, Washington, Chicago and LA.
Can't verify that, though

They got the last Student: they were found in New Jersey, Baltimore area, Richmond, Chicago, Des Moines, Minneapolis (and one of them had been in San Fransisco). Hmm If your above information is accurate, then this looks a little fishy.

Fishy indeed.

Perhaps the advance crew for the targeted cities.

I'm sure that hasn't escaped the notice of the investigators.

I highly doubt they were just 'sight seeing.'
