Hezbollah says it destroyed more than a dozen Israeli tanks-(w/photos)
Fox 6 San Diego ^ | August 10, 2006 | AP

Hezbollah television claims guerrillas attacked advancing Israeli troops about five miles inside the Lebanese border, destroying seven tanks. Militants claim the other six tanks were destroyed in another area along the border.

Residents of Lebanon's eastern Bekaa Valley say an Israeli drone fired a missile into a minibus, killing one person and wounding 12. Another Israeli airstrike targeted a road, while other planes dropped warning leaflets.

Meantime, Israel says it's delaying a new ground offensive in Lebanon until the weekend to give diplomats more time to work out a proposed cease-fire. Prospects for a U.N. resolution are uncertain, with the United States and France still at odds.

Israel today also announced police arrested an Israeli Arab man several days ago on charges of spying for Hezbollah. He's being charged today with aiding the enemy at a time of war.

Hezzies do have advanced anti-tank weapons. Seems to be the weapon of choice even on Israeli infantry.

Looks like two tanks, not a dozen.

Doesn't the burning tank look more like an M-1?

Those are Israeli Merkavas - which like any recent MBT draw lots of inspiration from the M-1.

Looks like the front track got hit by one of the more modern ATGMs that Hezbollah got from France or Russia via Iran/Syria.

The rear track looks like it might have popped smoke (started to generate a smoke screen). Neither one looks to have been equipped with the Israeli anti-tank-missile-defense system.

know your friends

An Israeli soldier, wearing an United States bandana, has camouflage make up applied to his face as troops gather along the Lebanon border preparing to enter southern Lebanon in northern Israel Thursday Aug. 10, 2006. Israel has put plans for a new ground offensive in Lebanon on hold to give a chance to cease-fire efforts, senior government officials said Thursday, a day after Israel's Security Cabinet approved a major expansion of the monthlong war. Look at the difference between the front fender of the burning tank and the Merkava. Looks like two different kinds of tanks.

None of that stuff is cheap - the IR cams look like they are of recent production, and they're not cheap trash, either.

The lens on the bottom picture's camera is *Russian* and should be of pretty good quality.

You're right - the rear track is a Merkava. Front track is too small to be an Abrams (not that the Israelis have them, I'm just thinkin in terms of Photochopping).

Front one is probably a Magach 7.

They must be using that new math. I only count two tanks in the picture.

And while the first tank is certainaly in flames, the second tank looks like it might be making smoke to mask its position.

I see in the photo of the radios a PRC25/77, but cannot make out the brand of what looks like a ham radio set. The military sets on the top are not familiar, IDF?

it seems to me that bringing all your tanks and troops right up to the border and letting the whole world know about it makes you a sitting duck for the Katushas...

why is Israel doing this?.....they should take a little territory to make a sufficient buffer for their own country.....Lebanese could still live there and probably would be HAPPY to live under sane conditions....

These are pictures of the first two. Rueters is working on pictures of the rest. Ignore any similarities between these two and the other ten.
