Alaska queries BP oilfield checks
BBC ^ | August 10, 2006 | BBC

The governor of Alaska has questioned whether BP misled it over the condition of its pipelines, given the recent leak from the Prudhoe Bay oilfield. The shutdown at the site is expected to cost Alaska $6.4m (£3.4m) a day in tax revenues and this has prompted a government state-wide hiring freeze.

The closure followed "numerous" satisfactory maintenance reports from BP, governor Frank Murkowski said.

He said BP would be "held responsible" for its earlier management of the site.

"BP must get the entire Prudhoe Bay field back up and running as soon as is safely possible," he said.

This event could cost "The Gov" a LOT of votes in the upcoming primaries.

He lost mine a long time ago, should be an interesting election season tho.

Why can't they make SUV's run on caribou meat?

I actually visited Alaska in August, 2002 (Land tour) and I went from Anchorage to Fairbanks, above Polar Cirlce (Gateway to Arctic National Park). I've seen Trans-Alaska Pipeline a number of times--really impressive engineering feat to build Pipeline largely overland in Permafrost.

However, Pipelines require good maintenance. Plus, considering how crucial Energy Security for National Security, this incident certainly requires a thorough inquiry.

We do, but around here we usually call them dog sleds.

um... money that does not come in is not 'lost' because you never had it in the first place.

It's just a good thin the Wal-Marts aren't shutting down and "depriving" them of tax revenues.

How much did Alaska invest in the pipeline? I suspect very little if any. If true, I won't find the tears to shed over their "loss".

Glad you enjoyed your visit -tell your friends what fun you had, they are welcome as well.

The TransAlaska Pipeline Systems (TAPS) is very well maintained and is 'pigged' regularly. It also heavily regulated and has multiple FedGov and SoA watchdogs - it is the most heavily regulated pipeline in the USofA.

The pipelines in question are feeders from wells to separators to Pump Station #1. They are not regulated nor covered by the SoA watchdogs - both are likely to change...

Ah, someone who knows whereof he speaks.

What bothers me is that the words "criminal investigation" were being thrown around immediately and heavily. "Investigation", fine. "Criminal investigation?" Let's wait until more information is available to sling words like that around.

And I have no friends or relatives working for BP.

The Chuckster (Mr Hammel) has a spotty record on being right or even correct. He has, however, been spot on several times.

Use his website like you would, say, Debka ; )
