National Preparedness Month is a nationwide effort held each September to encourage Americans to take simple steps to prepare for emergencies in their homes, businesses and schools. National Preparedness Month 2006 is sponsored by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. The goal of the month is to increase public awareness about the importance of preparing for emergencies and to encourage individuals to take action. Throughout September, Homeland Security will work with a wide variety of organizations, including local, state and federal government agencies and the private sector, to highlight the importance of family emergency preparedness and promote individual involvement through events and activities across the nation.

Along those lines...

I was at Costco this morning, and to my surprize they had a display of "Emergency Food". It was something like 256 meals, sealed in a 5 gallon bucket, and advertized as good for 20 years. Sounds like MRE's (or a variant thereof) and was selling for $199. It states that you need to provide your own potable water and heat source, as some of the meals can be served hot.

Must be a market out there for such a thing, or Costco wouldn't carry it...

Love the recommendations from Ready.gov..... they recommend games for kids and pliers among other things....I guess it would be politically incorrect to suggest that a family be prepared to defend themselves in a time of emergency.

I have two kids. I live in a constant state of preparedness for whatever emergencies each day brings. And trust me each day brings at least one ........

In my Costco it was $109. Of course it must be noted. The las thing written on the bucket: 100% Vegetarian.

That's the one! Of course, if worse came to worse, I've been feeding and plumping up all of the neighborhood squirels for years; nothing is quite as tasty as fresh-made squirrel stew, and I'll be freeze-dried veggies would be just fine with a fat, urban tree-rat...

My Ted-tosterone levels must be elevated this morning....
