In Islam, as in Judaism and Christianity, there are certain beliefs concerning the cosmic struggle at the end of time--Gog and Magog, anti-Christ, Armageddon, and for Shiite Muslims, the long awaited return of the Hidden Imam, ending in the final victory of the forces of good over evil, however these may be defined. Mr. Ahmadinejad and his followers clearly believe that this time is now, and that the terminal struggle has already begun and is indeed well advanced. It may even have a date, indicated by several references by the Iranian president to giving his final answer to the U.S. about nuclear development by Aug. 22. This was at first reported as "by the end of August," but Mr. Ahmadinejad's statement was more precise. What is the significance of Aug. 22? This year, Aug. 22 corresponds, in the Islamic calendar, to the 27th day of the month of Rajab of the year 1427. This, by tradition, is the night when many Muslims commemorate the night flight of the prophet Muhammad on the winged horse Buraq, first to "the farthest mosque," usually identified with Jerusalem, and then to heaven and back (c.f., Koran XVII.1). This might well be deemed an appropriate date for the apocalyptic ending of Israel and if necessary of the world. It is far from certain that Mr. Ahmadinejad plans any such cataclysmic events precisely for Aug. 22. But it would be wise to bear the possibility in mind.

I think on August 22nd a big threat will be issued to Israel and also the United States. No dastardly actions by Iran but big threats will be made. Threats might take the shape of:
We will nuke Israel if .....
We will cut off all oil to Europe and America if ....

Aug 22 is good date for Ahmadinejad . Iran has stalled and stalled. By August 22nd nations are bringing in harvests with a view to provisioning for the winter. Fuel supplies are lined up for the winter. Iran will start threatening winter oil supplies which impacts directly on heating, never mind gasoline for transport. Russia pulled fuel supply stunts last winter and Iran paid heed

China and Russia may back up Ahmadinejad. High probability at least one will. Back them with nuclear weapons umbrella and maybe even publicly transfer some to them

IRAN'S August 22 threat may be Europe and USA must rein in Israel or no oil this winter with 10% reduction in oil exports immediately. And Chavez will chime in few months later to cut off oil to USA but not Europe.
Reining in Israel means Israel gets out of Lebanon and stops bombing Leb.
Oil is not fungible if Iran and Venezuela want to make it so. Today it's child's play to track tankers via GPS and make sure they offload at their promised destinations in China India and the 3rd world. And the oil will be sold at a discount too. But not so for USA and Europe

I wouldn't count on that. They're the only ones that seem to have a handle on their "Muslim Question."
My prediction has been, for quite some time, that if Iran successfully gets a nuke they are going to issue an ultimatum, or fatwa, if you will -- US out of Iraq, and Israel out of Israel.
I think it more likely a nukular test on the 22nd, though it could be a conventional missile test -- less likely since he's promising an answer to the world that day. I don't think he's going to try to take down Israel.
But I could be wrong, and he might want to be vewy, vewy careful about setting off nukular fireworks in that region. He could get taken down just on the basis of a test, instantaneously, and with extreme prejudice. Kinda doubtful because things don't seem to work that way. But what I'm seeing, living through these ultra-historic times, is that things seem to drag along, day after workaday day, and then events proceed with blinding speed.
I think you miss the point. The Iranian Nut Job is TRYING to start the last battle to end the "war" and start the next phase of Muslim existence. Fanatics can never be trusted to do the rational thing. To him our retaliation would be welcome when it springs to life the 1/2 billion man Muslim army.

Depending on the bomb size they would have some fallout, but you might try reading through some of these materials, http://www.millennium-ark.net/News_Files/menu.nuke.html , while much of this applies to the United States and Canada the information is relevant when evaluating a nuke in the ME. I found the "What to Do If a Nuclear Disaster Is Imminent" and the information "11 Steps to Survival" very interesting reading. I'd be surprised if Iran drops a nuclear bomb on Israel of any portent size. If they drop a nuclear anything it could very well be a dirty bomb.
My bet is no Iran nuclear test on Aug 22nd. But there will be big threats made. Islams love threats, intimidation and bullying. That's the way they also deal with fellow Muslims.
