Events unfolding since the dismemberment of the Soviet Union indicate the emergence of a new world order - a world order in which non-state and militant entities like Al Qaeda, Hamas, Hezbollah and Lashkar-e-Taiba, have come to play an influential role on the world stage. They have not only been able to influence the direction of the world events and the policies of the major world powers but have also forced the common man to bring about changes in his daily life.

The world powers, despite their abhorrence of these entities, have found themselves compelled to enter into negotiations with them. Russia held direct talks with Hamas after it won the Palestinian elections and a Reuters news report quoted a Hamas leader as saying that the United States and the European Union have been in contact with the militant group despite having listed it as a terrorist organization. Pakistan has never completely severed its relationship with the Taliban and it is believed that Islamabad also maintains some kind of a liaison with Al Qaeda.

It's inconceivable to me that these savages (yes, savages) have so outsmarted the whole rest of the world...so much so that they have become key players on the global scene - and much more powerfiul than any government in their ability to form policy and affect a nation's daily life (and where our tax dollars go). This article is a wake up call.

They have at their hands the finances to offer solutions to what they see as "problems" but instead they seek to influence government policy.

If the US would engage in a crash program of Apollog Moon landing proporations to make itself energy independent by using the whole basket (including more efficiency) at its disposal, the terrorism problem would be over in 10 to 15 years as the money dried up and the Middle East became as irrelevant as Africa.

Then they would either have to modernize, or simply be confined to their reservations of irrlevance.

Wishful thinking. Look how much oil (Energy) companies contribute to the elections of politicians. What politician will stand up to these lobbyists? We will not have an oil substitute until the last drop of oil is pumped from the ground. By that time the (Energy) oil companies will unveil the next oil "substitute". Think about it, what incentive would they have to replace oil with something less expensive and risk making LESS money. NONE. That is actually against corporate law.

It is a national security issue and should be discussed as such. It goes beyond economics and should be discussed as such.

I certainly don't expect the oil companies to go along, but poltically considering the benefit to farmers, in terms of increased prices for a huge range of products as well as land use rights for wind mills, it has the potential to happen.

If a crash program were sold to Americans as their patriotic duty and it included conserving, Americans would rise to the challenge. Bush squandered the opportunity. It is the only thing Al Gore probably would have done right and certainly wouldn't have been enough. On this one though W. and Cheney missed a chance to make America stronger and safer. We will have to wait until 2008 to see if we get a President with the foresight to at least try.

We can't even muster enough votes / interest to have our POTUS think seriously about securing our borders. GWB is just happy to sit by and let the restaurants have $6 dollar an hour dish washers....don't worry about the 5000 people strolling across our borders unaccounted for each week. Those lobbyists against THAT endeavor have 1/10th the clout that the Energy companies do.

I know that W. & Co. won't do it, but the next President might be willing. It certainly would be a winner on the campaign trail. Unfortuantely, the right has let the left have this one along with science.

I understand your sentiment, but any person (politician) taking this stance simply will NOT have the funds to run for POTUS. They would be relegated to third string long before the debates.

National Security means nothing to pointy headed liberals who consider America to be the cause of the problems. Their ultimate goal is the collapse and overthrow of our constitutional system of government.

Now more than ever we need to remind people they don't have to stay here if they don't like it. They need to stop trying to change hundreds of years of social thought and impose their global will. GW needs to be hammered in the media about our borders. Commercials should be aired showing the trash and degradation to our wilderness areas and the plight of our cities from the illegals crossing and dumping on us. We should be thanking GW and for that matter all of congress for doing NOTHING!
