Mel Gibson's Apology OK With Catholic League
Monday, July 31, 2006 3:51 p.m. EDT
Catholic League President Bill Donohue commented today on the furor over the comments Mel Gibson allegedly made after his arrest for drunk driving Friday morning: "What Mel Gibson apparently said is indefensible. The remark attributed to him, The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world, is anti-Semitic and irresponsible.
Fortunately, he has apologized for his bigoted outburst.
"Unfortunately, his apology is being rejected by some who should know better. To wit: Abraham Foxman, head of the Anti-Defamation League, has branded Gibsons apology unremorseful and insufficient.
"Moreover, Foxman concludes that it shows what a sham it is for Gibson to portray himself as the tolerant, loving person who made The Passion of the Christ.
"We have quite a file on Ted Turner at the Catholic League. Unlike Foxman, I have accepted every apology Turner has ever made for his anti-Catholic outbursts, all of which were made while he was sober.
"Indeed, I even went so far as to say that no one in his right mind would ever put Ted Turner in the same camp with a Klansman or an inveterate bigot.
"More recently, when radio shock-jocks Opie and Anthony apologized for their orchestrated anti-Catholic stunt in St. Patricks Cathedral a few years back, I not only accepted their apology, I was the first guest on their new CBS radio show and welcomed their return.
"But Mels enemies will never cut him a break. Their real goal is to discredit The Passion of the Christ, and that is why their propaganda machine is in full gear. Never mind that Mel has said that Anti-Semitism is not only contrary to my personal beliefs, it is also contrary to the core message of my movie.
"How ironic it is to note that the core message of his film forgiveness is sorely lacking in his critics.
"In 2003, Roman Polanski, the convicted child rapist, received a standing ovation when he won an Oscar for The Pianist. Nice to know what really offends Hollywood.
Mr. Donahue is absolutely correct.
'Zactly.
I simply refuse to accept that fact.

Of course the Catholic League would be ok with Mel Gibson's apology. They are not a Jewish group dedicated to fighting anti-semitism. CL is an advocacy group for Roman Catholics. They're doing their job and ADL is doing theirs.
That's all that really needs to be said I think.
LOL, you had room for plenty more words there!
I never saw The Pianist but I heard it was a good movie. I vowed never to pay money to see it though.
I think you did no read the article, it addresses your point with examples.
This "apology" nonsense is amazing. What was the apology for anyway?
"Sorry, I got caught"
Mel Gibson should either STICK TO his belief that "Jews cause all wars," or go on to REJECT his belief that "Jews cause all wars."
These apologies just mean he is sorry that he got caught saying it.
You couldn't tell by me. I haven't seen it either and don't make any plans to.
"I never saw The Pianist but I heard it was a good movie. I vowed never to pay money to see it though."
It was a good movie in a horrible sort of way. Very depressing... but at the end, everything was fine and dandy. All those people dead... no problemo!
Acting was amazing, btw.
Very well stated. If Gibson had any integrity, he would leave Hollywood and go join the jihad. He is in Hollywood for only one thing: Money. He is addicted to Jewish money more than to alcohol.
I suspect that is what drives him to drink. He hears his father's voice saying, "Mel, how can you take money from those Jews?"
LOL, very cute!!
What are you doing leaving code, you did that on purpose I believe because you never do that.
This I believe to be true. I also think there is great resentment in Hollywood that Gibson didn't need them to make his movie, and his film proved them wrong by becoming a massive hit.
They tolerate, even celebrate all sorts of depraved and degraded behavior from a plethora of supposed "stars" these days, but they won't accept Gibson's apology for what he did while drunk.
No I read the article. I just don't see this as news because Gibson insulted Jews, not Catholics so who cares if the Catholic League accepts his apology? What have other Jewish groups had to say about Gibson's comments? That should be news.
