The number of attacks by extremists on researchers using animals has decreased, according to figures released by the Association of the British Pharmaceutical Industry (ABPI) yesterday.
In the first six months of this year, 15 incidents were recorded at people's private homes, compared with 32 in the same period last year.
The figures also show a drop in almost every area of activity by anti-vivisectionists, with demonstrations down from 670 to 424. "Good progress has been made ... in combating animal rights extremists," said Philip Wright, the ABPI's director of science and technology.

Eco-terrorists finally must pay the piper
A number of years ago, when most of them were still young and starry-eyed with the zeal of environmental sweetness, a group of men and women went on a five-state arson spree targeting federal, state and private facilities in an eager desire to punish evil and educate the misguided.
They called a tune that resulted in millions of dollars in damages, operating under the banner of the Earth Liberation Front and Animal Liberation Front. Now they're paying the piper big time. Make that hard time, in federal prison under terms of sentences that will be handed out later this year in Portland, Ore.
One of those, all of whom entered plea agreements after being indicted by federal grand juries and their arrests by the FBI, is Chelsea Dawn Gerlach. She was a party to the firebombing of ski lodges at Vail, Colo., in October 1988, a spree that caused $12 million in damages. That was only one of the series of arsons in which she participated, before her underground cell disbanded in 2001.
"These acts were motivated by a deep sense of despair and anger at the deteriorating state of the global environment and the escalating inequities within society," she said.
Good grief.
Among the many sad aspects to this whole case is that Gerlach obviously was motivated by a twisted belief that she was doing good.
But in an extreme way, it's a scary reminder of how the environmental movement spawns zealots many of whom have turned their avid devotion to all things green on Alaska and on issues facing this state.
On a website that was mounted in Gerlach's defense, this was noted: "She has been involved in many different aspects of the environmental movement." Explained the Oregonian newspaper in Portland: "She interned with the Oregon Natural Resources Council, canvassing for the Sierra Club, and leading the Environmental Resource Center at Evergreen State College in Olympia."
Her future is 10 years in the slammer.
Others involved in this widespread conspiracy face upward of 15 years in prison for eco-terrorism attacks that toppled a federal transmission tower, caused $1.2 million in damages to the U.S. Department of Agriculture building in Olympia, Wash., and destroyed the University of Washington's Urban Horticulture Center in Seattle, among other firebombings.
Three of those charged in this eco-terrorism are still at large. One committed suicide in jail after his arrest. The others, like Gerlach, are headed for years and years behind bars.
Their fate, we trust, will be fair warning to others of like minds.
I think that the fact six of them (ELF/ALF Members) pleaded guilty to multiple arsons last week, along with several more who are on the run internationally from the FBI might have served to throw a wet blanket on all ELF/ALF activities around the world. Word's on the street that they will be treated as terrorists.
