"...the tragic loss of a soldier yesterday who I happen to know and I think probably is from my Regiment. We've received e-mails from him a few days ago and he described the fact that he was taking within - in one case - three meters of his position "for tactical necessity - not being targeted". Now that's veiled speech in the military and what he was telling us was Hizbullah fighters were all over his position and the IDF were (sic) targeting them and that's a favorite trick by people who don't have representation in the UN. They use the UN as shields knowing that they can't be punished for it."

Irish officer warned Israel on U.N. staff safety

DUBLIN (Reuters) - An Irish army officer in south Lebanon warned Israel six times that air strikes threatened the lives of U.N. observers there before four staff were killed in a direct hit, Ireland's Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.
"On six separate occasions he was in contact with the Israelis to warn them that their bombardment was endangering the lives of U.N. staff in South Lebanon," a Department of Foreign Affairs spokesman said.
"He warned: 'You have to address this problem or lives may be lost'," the spokesman said of comments by Lieutenant Colonel John Molloy, the chief liaison officer between U.N. forces in South Lebanon and the Israelis.
The remarks came after Foreign Minister Dermot Ahern summoned Israel's ambassador to his office to "protest at the strongest possible level". Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Ahern cast doubt on assurances the deaths had been an accident.
"Evidence that we have would suggest that this was either an incredible accident or else was in some way directly targeted," Ahern told reporters following the meeting.
U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan has called on Israel to investigate the "apparently deliberate targeting" of the base. A U.S. State Department Official said on Tuesday that Israel had told the United States the attack was an accident.
Ireland's, which until 2001 had a full infantry battalion stationed in Lebanon as part of a U.N. force, currently has 17 soldiers in the region, 10 of whom are in Lebanon.

I've seen a few references to this radio show, but no full articles yet. It seemed worth posting, but it would be interesting to hear what else, if anything, was said.

Israel owes the UN nothing and is way too tolerant of them.
I sypmathize with the Irish officer. The "peacekeepers" have no business staying in a combat zone. When Israel is attacked, a in 1967, they're ordered out instantly. American's should never be under UN command, else they'll die for globalism like these soldiers did.
I guess when Hizzbull(shyte)ah promised an "open war", they meant they'd surround themselves with fewer civilians, but added UN personnel..
I'm going to turn on CNN and anxiously await this story..how long do you think I'll have to wait??

He accepted an apology from Israel and it appears to me that he rather suspiciously seems a little eager to "move on".

That jumps out immediately. Why would Americans want to be under the command of an organization that forces them to be cannon fodder.
What the hell do you expect ...if you declare any positions a "no fire zone" (Civilian housing, Hospitals, Ambulances, UN position, etc. etc. etc.) Hizbullah is going to hide there and shoot at the Israelis...
