Irish officer warned Israel on U.N. staff safety
Wed Jul 26, 2006 6:18 PM BST

DUBLIN (Reuters) - An Irish army officer in south Lebanon warned Israel six times that air strikes threatened the lives of U.N. observers there before four staff were killed in a direct hit, Ireland's Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.

"On six separate occasions he was in contact with the Israelis to warn them that their bombardment was endangering the lives of U.N. staff in South Lebanon," a Department of Foreign Affairs spokesman said.

"He warned: 'You have to address this problem or lives may be lost'," the spokesman said of comments by Lieutenant Colonel John Molloy, the chief liaison officer between U.N. forces in South Lebanon and the Israelis.

The remarks came after Foreign Minister Dermot Ahern summoned Israel's ambassador to his office to "protest at the strongest possible level". Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Ahern cast doubt on assurances the deaths had been an accident.

"Evidence that we have would suggest that this was either an incredible accident or else was in some way directly targeted," Ahern told reporters following the meeting.

U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan has called on Israel to investigate the "apparently deliberate targeting" of the base. A U.S. State Department Official said on Tuesday that Israel had told the United States the attack was an accident.

Ireland's, which until 2001 had a full infantry battalion stationed in Lebanon as part of a U.N. force, currently has 17 soldiers in the region, 10 of whom are in Lebanon.

"tactical necessity"

CNN just reported the same thing. What the H3LL right does a bunch of "observers" have being there in the first place?

Israel owes the UN nothing and is way too tolerant of them.

Putting bits and pieces together today, I noticed Koffee Anan seemed to be backing off his "deliberate bombing" mouth-off of yesterday.

He accepted an apology from Israel and it appears to me that he rather suspiciously seems a little eager to "move on".

I'll bet there's more to this than meets the eye. As the above poster said.....the truth WILL come out.

Rush commented today that the incident appeared "fishy". I agree.

What the hell do you expect ...if you declare any positions a "no fire zone" (Civilian housing, Hospitals, Ambulances, UN position, etc. etc. etc.) Hizbullah is going to hide there and shoot at the Israelis...

Then Koffi needs to publicly order UN posts to shoot any sheltering themselves within range of the post.

Well..Kofi was choking on it today. When confronted at the UN about his immediate knee-jerk accusation of Israel doing this deliberately...he said "Remember, I said it APPEARS it was deliberate"...

A man of no character.

I heard a little tid bit of info today about the UN observers having a video tape of the actual kidnapping of the Israeli's.....at first denied, but than they confessed to having it...
Unfortunately UN Observers are caught in the middle and respond like their leadership.....woefully

The headline is completely misleading.

He said:

They use the UN as shields knowing that they can't be punished for it."

That should have been the headline.

Crosslink

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1672871/posts

This is what he actually wrote:

"On July 18, he provided CTV.ca with an update of his mission via e-mail. He said a great deal of fighting was taking place near his post.

"(O)ur vantage point which has a commanding view of the IDF (Israeli Defence Forces) positions on the Golan mountains to our east and the IDF positions along the Blue Line to our south, as well as, most of the Hezbollah static positions in and around our patrol base."

"It appears that the lion's share of fighting between the IDF and Hezbollah has taken place in our area."

He added that there had been numerous occasions when his post had come under fire, but wrote carefully to avoid revealing tactical information.

"What I can tell you is this: we have on a daily basis had numerous occasions where our position has come under direct or indirect fire from both artillery and aerial bombing," he wrote.

"The closest artillery has landed within two meters of our position and the closest 1000 lb aerial bomb has landed 100 meters from our patrol base."

See also this Canadian Press story as it appears in the Sun Media site:

UN observers asked Israel to stop bombing 10 times before post was hit: report

In particular note the closing paragraphs:

UN officials said Hezbollah militants had been operating in the area of the post, a routine tactic to prevent Israel from attacking them.

"We did repeatedly in recent days say (to Israel) that this was an exposed position, that Hezbollah militants were 500 metres away shielding themselves near UN workers and civilians," UN humanitarian chief Jan Egeland said. "That's why it is so inexplicable that what happened happened."

This means that the UN antis that, to its knowledge, Hezbollah was using this UN post as a shield.

Perhaps someone should commend to Annan and Egeland that they read the Geneva Conventions.

Until Harper mentioned the issue today, the media has failed utterly to ask this question:

Why were the UN personnel still in what had become a full combat zone a full fortnight after active belligerency had commenced?
