Send the USS COLE TO BERUIT for all the world to see!
original to FP | 071506 | Sam Pender

Posted on 07/17/2006 3:31:01 PM PDT by Blackrain4xmas

Wouldn't it be WONDERFUL to see the USS Cole off the coast of Beruit providing protection for 25000 fleeing Americans?

I think that'd send a knife-like message to UBL, and those who got so much pr from attacking it.

It's in the area, and just did a port call in Greece a week or so ago.

I think in the War on Terror it'd be a great reminder of the USS Cole incident and as the world media reported its presence. Al Jazeera, Al Arabiya, MSNBC, CBS, NYT....they'd all be compelled to report its signifigance, the attack done on it, and the effect of not responding to that attack.

It's the modern form of gunboat diplomacy for asymetric warfare.

It'd send a damn fine signal that America can be hit, but not sunk.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE Send your comments and hopes that the USS Cole be positioned for the world to see off the coast of Beruit....to the President

For the memory of those sailors that were murdered aboard her, I support the notion as well.

I believe the Cole is in the Iwo Jima task force which is in the 6th Fleet"s AOR and I am sure the Cole will be involved in the evacuation of US citizens from Lebanon.

More wonderful to see it off the coast of Iran lobbing cruise missiles on Ahmedinejads and mullahs heads.

The USS Cole is the ship all new Navy recruits want to be on. My son has put in his request to be stationed at Norfolk on the USS Cole. Guess I will know next week.

If I recall correctly - the USS Cole left for a 6 month deployment in the past month or so.

USS Cole Steams Back To Mideast
First Middle East Deployment For Ship Since 2000 Terrorist Attack In Yemen

(CBS/AP) The USS Cole left port Thursday for its first Middle East deployment since a 2000 terrorist attack blew a hole in its side and killed 17 sailors.

Tears flowed, the hugs were extra long and tight, handshakes were especially firm as the ship and its crew of 320 pulled out, reports CBS News correspondent Jim Krasula (audio).

The Cole, along with five other ships and a submarine, left the East Coast to conduct security operations in support of the War on Terrorism.

While worried about their loved ones, many family members believe the Navy will do everything possible to protect the Cole from another terrorist attack.

"Cole, along with all the other ships in the strike group, are very well prepared to handle anything that happens," Cmdr. Bradley Roberson, the ship's commaning officer, said on CBS News' The Early Show Thursday.

Carie Holmes' boyfriend Dane Clark is serving on the Cole.

"He's going to be in dangerous situations and I just hope he'll be OK. Hopefully. He will. He better!" Holmes told Krasula.

A few hours before the Cole departed, crew members learned that al Qaeda in Iraq leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi had been killed in a U.S. air strike, Roberson said.

"I think today's news shows that the struggle against terrorism is going to still continue on and be long. However, this is a path in the right direction," Roberson told Early Show co-anchor René Syler. "It shows that the troops over in Iraq are doing a great job, aided by the Iraqi people, and things are going well."

The Cole had been refueling in Yemen's port of Aden on Oct. 12, 2000, when al Qaeda-linked militants in a dinghy packed with explosives attacked. The explosion blew a hole in the side of the destroyer, but it remained above water and eventually underwent $250 million of repairs.

The victims are memorialized by 17 gold stars embedded in the floor of the corridor leading to the ship's dining area, reports Krasula. Roberson calls the ship an "active national monument."

No sailors from the 2000 crew are still aboard the Cole, which is expected to be gone for six months.

"This is a very outstanding crew, very smart, very talented, very brave. A lot of them have volunteered to come to this ship," Roberson said.

Methinks Reagan owes Beirut some paypack.

That was the Cole on her way to be repaired:

Cool transport (although the reason for it was sad of course)!

Yes, I like the Cole for symbolism.
Too bad we can’t send an escort ship to give the terrorist district in Lebanon a “blast from the past”.
Well, once the US citizens and friendlies are safely off-shore.

USS COLE (DDG 67) is the first warship named for Sergeant Darrell S. Cole, USMC (1920-1945). Sergeant Cole was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for his conspicuous gallantry in the campaign at Iwo Jima .

On August 25, 1941 , Cole enlisted in the Marine Corps for the duration of the National Emergency. Following boot camp at Parris Island , South Carolina , he was appointed to the Field Music School for training as a Marine Corps Field Musician (a bugler). He was unhappy in his role of Field Musician, because he had joined a fighting outfit to fight. He had applied for a change in rating, but was refused due to the shortage of buglers. He completed instruction and was transferred to the First Marine Regiment, First Marine Division. On August 7, 1942 , he reached the shores of Guadalcanal for the first American offensive of World War II, where he had an opportunity to fill in as a Machine Gunner in the absence of the regular gunner.

Cole completed his first overseas tour of duty and returned to the United States in February 1943 where he joined the First Batallion, Twenty-Third Marines, a part of the Fourth Marine Division at Camp Lejune , North Carolina . When the unit moved to California he again asked for relief as a Field Musician and for permission to perform line duties. Due to the shortage of buglers in the Marine Corps, his request was disapproved.

During the first engagement of the Fourth Division at Roi-Namur in the Kwajalein Atoll, Cole, again forsaking his bugle, went in to action as a Machine Gunner. Later, during the battle for Saipan , Cole was actually assigned to a machine gun unit and was even designated as a machine gun section leader. During the battle his squad leader was killed and Cole, although wounded, assumed command of the entire squad. He was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for "…his resolute leadership, indomitable fighting spirit and tenacious determination in the face of terrific opposition." He was also awarded the Purple Heart for wounds received in action.

A few days after the battle of Saipan , Cole again led his squad ashore in the invasion of the neighboring islands of Tinian . He continued to build his reputation as "The Fighting Field Musician."

After the Marianas campaigns, he resubmitted his request for a change of rating. This time his request was approved. He was redesignated Corporal "line" and was subsequently promoted to Sergeant in November 1944.

On February 19, 1945 , Sergeant Cole led his machine gun section ashore in the D-Day assault of Iwo Jima . Moving forward with the initial assault wave, a hail of fire from two enemy emplacements halted his section's advance. Sergeant Cole personally destroyed them with hand grenades. His unit continued to advance until pinned down for a second time by enemy fire from three Japanese gun emplacements. One of these emplacements was silenced by Cole's machine guns. When his machine guns jammed, armed only with a pistol and one hand grenade, Sergeant Cole made a one-man attack against the two remaining gun emplacements. Twice he returned to his own lines for additional grenades and continued the attack under fierce enemy fire until he had succeeded in destroying the enemy strong points.

Upon returning to his own squad, he was instantly killed by an enemy grenade. By his one-man attack and heroic self-sacrifice, Sergeant Cole enabled his company to move forward against the fortifications and attain their ultimate objective.

I'm sure the crew and families of DDG-67 salivate at the prospect of a Med run.

I'd like to see USS Reagan, USS Cole, and a great many other USN ships in the Med pulverizing Syria from north to south, east to west, until there are no military targets left. We owe Syria all kinds of payback for the past decades of terrorism, and now for a great deal of terrorism in Iraq that's killed a lot of great Americans - after we finish off Syria, then Iran's turn will come.

I believe that Israel by hitting Hamas drawing Hezbollah to move and then by relentlessly pounding Hezbollah is the catspaw in a US coordinated effort to get Syria to attack. Then it will be legal for Israel to go to Damascus. A day or two later, we would go across northern Syria in a blitz removing terrorist staging areas, around Lake Assad on both sides in case they try to blow the dam, and then south into Lebanon's Bekaa Valley for the WMD which will be facing the other way waiting for Israelis.

If I could do it all over again I would have gone to a small-boy as well. They have more port calls. I was still in A School when the Cole got hit, I will remember that day as long as I live.

Might I add that when the Cole is off the coast, gun's a blazin at sniper positions and anyone else that fires on evacuating Americans...the ship needs to have a 50' high flag blowin hard and strong

Don't forget to send those emails to the White House if you like this idea. Fox is already reporting that it's on its way.
