I was very pleased to read about your "sting" investigation and to learn that you have finally uncovered Congressman John P. Murtha for what he has been doing to the people of this Congressional Districy.

He has been parading up and doen this 6-county area with a twice-wounded Vietnam War hero background, and even has the audacity to list this in his Congressional Directory.

In your investigation, you will discover a phoney!

Murtha's own Marine Corp Official Record indicates that he incurred two lacerations during his Vietnam service--

March 22, 1967 -- on the cheek May 7, 1967 ---- above left eye

ON BOTH OCCASIONS, HIS RECORD INDICATES THAT OFFICER WAS TREATED IN FIELD AND RETURNED TO DUTY. NEXT OF KIN WAS NOT NOTIFIED.

For the above, he allegedly received two purple hearts and commendations galore. In my judgement, the above merit no such acclaim, nor do the people of this District deserve to be deceived in this matter.

You should investigate for yourself.

Lyndon Johnson paraded around with a silver star his entire life which he didn't earn. I don't really think these kind of accusations will gain much traction outside the folks who wouldn't vote for Murtha anyway. Better to focus on his recent treason.

You are right, this is not Ms. Irey's fight to make. It is up to those who he is bringing discredit to, to make him pay for these sorts of things.

Technically, that doesn't preclude Murtha from getting a Purple Heart.

He was treated, which is all that is required (in addition to it being incurred during hostile action).

That is to say, he could return to duty immediately and still be eligible.

A scratch, so long as it's enemy-inflicted, is a perfectly valid reason for a purple heart. As for "commendations galore," well, that's just how it was back there and then.

This letter reads like it was written by somebody with, er, personal problems.

Don't fool yourself!!..anyone thats been in the service or combat think a lot different....Phony metals are a huge insult to people that actually earned them!!....When presented properly...It speaks volumes about someones integrity!!!

I don't disagree. I just think anyone who served is already put out by Murtha's statements about the Marines. The are already voting for the opposition or sitting on their hands. This issue would be directed towards a voting block that has already made up it's mind not to vote for Murtha IMHO.

By any standard, he did nothing to earn it however, it was never-the-less awarded to Congressman Johnson by Gen. MacAurthur, abeit for largely political reasons.

Murtha's sounding just like that guy that ran at the top of the Dem ticket in '04. Both were garnered Purple Hearts for suffering 'wounds' that required Mercurochrome and band aids and neither want anybody seeing their records detailing the events that lead to it. Both turned on the military making outlandish claims against the fine men and women that serve for political expediency. Wonder if Murtha shot any 12-year old suspected V.C. in the back?
