Tragic accident? That kid probably had his choice of everything from a .38 revolver to a water cooled .30 machine gun.
People who are of good moral character have the right to own a weapon, but once you buy 98 of them, then you know that something is very wrong.

One gun is too many in the hands of irresponsible people. An 11 year old kid has the capacity to understand that guns are not toys and yet this kid stuck a gun in his friend's face and pulled the trigger.
Sounds to me that the father and grandmother didn't teach him to respect the weapon and nor did they provide him with ample supervision.

I guess if you want a coin collection, you should only be allowed one coin.

but once you buy 98 of them, then you know that something is very wrong. The number of guns anyone owns has no relevance.
I don't own 98 guns but I am a gun owner and I always taught my kids gun safety.

Welcome to FR, and you've got a nice blog. Must be frustrating to hear mostly the "other side" in school, and I'll bet a few teachers have labeled you a troublemaker for not buying the party line. Stay strong.

People who are of good moral character have the right to own a weapon, but once you buy 98 of them, then you know that something is very wrong.Welcome to FR. My inclination is to agree. If someone had 98 pairs of shoes, or cats, or clocks, or televisions, or something like that, it would not be considered normal. I get the point you're making. I'm certainly not challenging anybody's right to own firearms, but the situation seems a bit over the top.
BTW, my kids are all teens, the youngest in 9th grade also, and they are all FReepers.

looked and looked and didn't see moral character in the 2nd Amendment.

What part of
"the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed." do you disagree with?
You seem more concerned that the father had 98 firearms than that the boy killed his friend.
If the boy had used a hammer instead of a gun, would that have been better? More interestingly - would have you commented on it?

Thousands of folks have gun collections, including myself. I have far more than 98 rifles of the WWI era alone. The problem isn't with the collection of guns but rather the lack of responsible behavior of the father.

People who are of good moral character have the right to own a weapon, but once you buy 98 of them, then you know that something is very wrong.I'm almost there...but does "something wrong" only occur after #98? Or is it a gradual process that starts inexorably after #2?
To: americanstrategist
I disagree. This man has every right to own as many firearms as he wants(as long as they are obtained LEGALLY).Where his RIGHTS end is where his RESPONSIBILITIES begin! He had a resposibility to SECURE these firearms so that this sort of TRAGEDY was impossible!!I don't believe in"Gun Accidents",I believe in "Gun CARELESSNESS"!!!!
To: americanstrategist
People who are of good moral character have the right to own a weapon, but once you buy 98 of them, then you know that something is very wrong I'm sure this has already been repeatedly pointed out, but I refuse to fail in saying it also.
The constitution makes no limitation on quantity nor does it qualify one as having bad moral character because he/she owns more than the number you permit.
