Plotters sought to bomb NY tunnel: paper
Jul 7, 2006 WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A plot to bomb New York's Holland Tunnel in an effort to flood the Wall Street financial district has been uncovered by the FBI, with a suspect arrested in Lebanon, New York's Daily News reported on Friday.
The newspaper, quoting unidentified counterterrorism sources, said the investigation involved what officials considered a "serious plot" to detonate enough explosives inside the landmark tunnel to destroy it and send devastating floodwaters through lower Manhattan.
The 79-year-old tunnel runs under the Hudson River between New Jersey and Manhattan and carried almost 34 million vehicles in 2005.

I can see how blowing up the tunnel would flood the TUNNEL. However, how would it send floodwaters through Manhattan? Water, IIRC, seeks its own level. The tunnel is below the level of Manhattan streets, so how could water from there cause flooding? Why isn't Manhattan flooded right now anyway?
How long before the MSM claims that the plot "wasn't that serious"?
Dude you left out the interesting part.
"The Daily News quoted a counterterrorism source as saying officials were alarmed because the plotters allegedly got a pledge of financial and tactical support from Jordanian associates of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the leader of al Qaeda in Iraq before he was killed last month in a U.S. air strike."

Wait, the MSM media will portray this as nothing more than kids just acting out.
Global Warming is much more important..../s
Another plot uncovered.
Maybe New Yorker's want to rethink their support for the Jersey Girls.

The Daily News said authorities in Beirut, at the request of U.S. officials, arrested one of the suspected conspirators, identified as Amir Andalousli, in recent months and that agents were seeking other suspects around the world.
The newspaper said the FBI and New York police officials declined comment on the investigation, which it quoted a source as describing as "ongoing."

The paper said it was not clear if any cash or assistance was delivered.
Lebanon's government had been asked by the United States to hold off on announcing the arrest while operations to disrupt the plot were continuing, the Daily News quoted sources as saying.
It said New York officials, according to sources, believed the plan could conceivably work with enough explosives placed in the middle of the tunnel.
But it added that some experts did not consider the plan feasible because the tunnel was protected by concrete and cast-iron steel and that even if the tunnel cracked, the Wall Street district would not flood because it was above the level of the river.
Seven men were charged in the United States last month with conspiring to blow up the landmark Sears Tower in Chicago and FBI buildings in Miami and four other cities as part of a pledge to al Qaeda to wage war against America. U.S. officials said the plot never went beyond the earliest stages.

How long before the NY Times publishes all the details about how this was uncovered, including the names and addresses of the parties involved (and how to bypass any security)?
What makes you think NYers (real ones, not transplants from fly-over country) don't despise those media whores even more than you do? Remember, most of us knew at least one victim at least casually and/or almost lost someone close (I knew 12 and had the closest of family there). We have less than zero tolerance for their efforts to make the tragedy of that day their own personal property.
Plot foiled. New York Times deeply saddened.
I don't know; but I do know what I see and that is a lot of support for the NYT in the letters to the editor section.
Granted, there are also letters of condemnation, but not enough to satisfy my sense of outrage.
I know you were deeply affected by 9/11, as were many other New Yorkers, but it seems all too many have forgotten.
"Granted, there are also letters of condemnation, but not enough to satisfy my sense of outrage"
You're referring to the editor section of the NYT? If so I would imagine its because they put most of them in the "evil american" basket.
Where's the "WTF" cat?
As opposed to what? Aluminum steel? Paper mache steel? Sheesh what a waste of a college education.
The Times prints what it wants to. For all we know they receive twenty letters of disgust for every one of support. Look at the origin of the letters to the editor. The times always likes to flaunt its global reach by printing as many (usually more) letters from far-flung readers as they do from NYers. You are more likely to see a letter from Seattle than from Staten Island.
An American using the Times as an accurate reflection of what NYers really think is akin to a Frenchman using the Times as a reflection of what all Americans (including you Peach) think.
Well thank heaven they arrested him in a nice place like Lebanon. I certainly hope they don't transfer him to that evil Gitmo place, but at least the OverLords Of All Congress and Government (aka SCOTUS) will make sure that he's tried in our own courts, at our expense.
Whew, what a blankety-blank relief.
(thanks for the ping / rant)
Yes, I would imagine the Slimes has no scruples whatsoever about printing the letters that show them in the best light.
They are aware of their circulation numbers, make no mistake about it.
If the tunnel were breached, the level the water would seek is the level of the Hudson River's servoce.
