Feminists at 'The View' Fire Star Jones . . . for Failing to Be Fat

As a veteran Couric watcher, I've recently come to follow [without actually watching] doings at The View, since Katie's replacement Meredith Vieira was for years a member of the show's cast. For those unfamiliar with it, The View is an all-female televised coffee klatsch and gabfest of which Barbara Walters is the creator, partial owner and a co-host.

The View has a distinct liberal tint to its patter. And as we know, one of the tenets of feminist theology is that women have a right to whatever kind of body size they want, free of societal restraints.

How ironic - some might say hypocritical - that one reason for the recent firing of co-host Star Jones is that . . . she refused to stay fat! As you'll note from the before and after pics here, Star has undergone a dramatic physical transformation. According to this AP article:

"Walters said ABC network chiefs had decided last fall not to renew Reynolds' contract because its research showed that Reynolds' dramatic weight loss and 2004 wedding to banker Al Reynolds had turned viewers off."

My personal view is that employers, subject to their contractual agreements, should be able to hire and fire as per their own standards. Long live Hooters. But isn't this a case of The View not practicing what it preaches? Why, were the tables turned, some might even accuse a conservative show that fired Jones under similar circumstances of racism, of trying to keep Star down on the 'fat farm.'

< My understanding is that Rosie is replacing Vieira. Don't think Star's replacement has been named. >

You are correct. My understanding is that there will be a temp (Oprah's gal Gayle is vying for it) to replace Star or it will be someone new everyday (probably try-outs) and then the Star replcement will start in September.

That person doesn't matter to me, though. I want it to go down after Rosie joins to make a point. America does not love you, Rosie.

After the way the cast of "The View" treated (really mistreated) Laura Ingraham when she was on the show to talk about her book "Shut up and Sing" a few years ago, I could care less which obnoxious miscreant was replaced by yet another even more obnoxious miscreant. One of the best exercise of free choice my late mother made was to stop watching this show and instead spend her last 4 years watching whatever was on FOX NEWS.

Rosie is very alienating. Initially I think whe will attract viewers but I don't see her functioning as part of a group due to her ego. Having never watched The View I have really no clue how the cast interact but she might bigfoot them all.

Yep- Ron White is a genius. I like Larry the Cable Guy too- he's got a really quick mind behind that exterior, and his stories about his sister covered in moles are great. Carlos Mencia is absolutely hilarious- he's worth the time to watch.

The only thing Rosie can jump is positions in the buffet line.

Not to quibble, but I don't think that's a cornerstone of FEMINIST theology. I just think that's libertarian common sense. Don't men have a right to whatever kind of body size THEY want? Or does some bureaucrat somewhere now get to tell me to drop 20 pounds and firm up those sagging abs?

"Black" doesn't garner nearly as many "PC points" as "lesbian" anymore.

Look for Star to be replaced by an illegal alien (the ultimate "PC" coupe), who will join the conversation everyday from an undisclosed location.

Actually, Rosie is replacing Meridith. They haven't announced a replacement for Star yet.

Sad how much I know about a show I never watch.

Don't tell that to Elizabeth. She will kick you butt. Remember she is a survivor and an extremely conservative person.

Yes she is, but per my sister who watches (I don't) she isn't aggressive and remember she's hugely outnumbered. My sister says that she's easily dismissed by the others. She's mainly treated as the "token conservative because-we-have-to-have-one".

Of course people have the right to any body size they want. But feminists are often heard to complain about how society - read 'men' - enforce unrealistic body ideals on women.
