'PEACE' GATHERING TURNS VIOLENT: Forest Service abandons checkpoint after incident w/Rainbow group
The Steamboat Pilot ^ | 6-21-06 | Matt Stensland

Posted on 06/21/2006 9:22:55 PM PDT by Main Street

CLARK — The Rainbow Family peace gathering turned hostile Tuesday when a group of attendees began hurling rocks and sticks at law enforcement officers, U.S. Forest Service officials said.

The incident forced the officers to abandon a checkpoint they had established near the entrance to the Rainbow gathering campsite in North Routt County, Forest Service spokeswoman Diann Ritschard said. Officers had not returned to the checkpoint as of Tuesday afternoon.

The incident happened at about 11 a.m. and involved Forest Service officers who were manning the checkpoint set up to issue citations to anyone attempting to enter the gathering. Citations were being issued because Rainbow Family members had not signed a free Forest Service special-use permit, which is required for gatherings of 75 or more people.

Before the Tuesday morning incident, Forest Service officials were blocking people from entering the gathering and telling them to "turn around," Forest Service spokeswoman Denise Ottaviano said.

Officials said a group of about 100 people -- some of whom already were inside the gathering area -- participated in the incident. Other participants included people waiting outside the checkpoint who were told they could not enter the gathering, Ritschard said.

No arrests were made, and the officers left the scene because they did not want to escalate the situation, Ritschard said. No officers were injured.

"This incident will be investigated, and we're not exactly sure what course of action will be taken," Ritschard said. "The Forest Service is deciding what action to take."

In addition to Forest Service law enforcement officers, a Routt County Sheriff's Office deputy also was at the checkpoint at the time of the incident, Ritschard said.

"The Forest Service is very serious about the safety of our officers and cooperators," Ritschard said.

Also Tuesday, an incomplete special-use permit application was submitted to the Forest Service, Ritschard said. She said the application contained profanity where the applicant was supposed to write the location of the gathering. The application can't be accepted as submitted, Ritschard said.

Between 60 and 70 illegal gathering citations had been issued to Rainbow gathering attendees as of Tuesday morning. As many as 20,000 people are expected to attend the official peace gathering from July 1 to 7. About 500 people already have arrived.

Citations will be issued to people who use the closed trails or ignore other regulations, including:

â– Public nudity

â– Camping within 150 feet of any running stream or body of water

â– Placing kitchen facilities, food preparation areas, gray water pits or slit trenches within 300 feet of any running stream or body of water

â– Placing kitchen facilities, food preparation areas, gray water pits or slit trenches within 150 feet of any open road

â– Cutting any standing trees in the area described as: north of Forest Road 505, west of Forest Road 498, south of the private property in Big Red Park and east of Forest Road 500.

Also, about 15 miles of National Forest system motorized trails (numbers 1204 and 1199) near the Rainbow gathering have been closed. Ritschard said the trails were closed to keep the public away from the gathering.

"Most people would enjoy (trails) more at a place that is less congested," Ritschard said.

Did this take place in Maine? Those Rainbow kids are wacky, but fun to hang with in Northern Maine. It's an alternative universe.

They should be issued Smith & Wessons - or at least Tasers, and a hatchet to finish the job while they're squirming around in their own piss.

Every year, some community out west has to go through these shennanigans...dealing with the groups and their waste productes and their impact on the land, and they don't really care, long as they can have their party...

Now this is sad. Our LE turned and ran? They should have retreated and then came back with paddy wagons and arrested every one of them.

Doesn't that say that a large crowd can do what they want? I don't know anything about them but I'm getting the impression that freepers like them. What if it had been code pink at a military base? If there are a lot of them, does LE back down?

This must be the 'Senator Murtha' branch of the Forest Service.

At the first sign of trouble the 'redeployed' to an alternate location...

Considering nobody got tasered, pepperballed or shot during the rock throwing, I would say they have a cavalier attitude towards officer safety.

Yep. I think Washingotn and Oregon have their share of these types of fruit loops. I think some of them even built tree houses like 40 feet up in a tree and live there to protest it getting cut down!

It's summer so maybe they should order up some helicopters and C130s full of fire retardant & water and thoroughly douse the forest LOL.

About 10-15 years ago I had the displeasure of seeing the Rainbow Family in Flagstaff, AZ. The filthy, drugged out,
mentally and physically sick members of this group was beyond comprehensive. I'm sure a wildfire will sweep through the campsite before the event ends.

I remember when they were smaller. Back when, we went to one of our favorite camping areas and found them there. There were maybe 50 of them occupying about 3/4 of a little 20 spot primitive campground we frequent. They had nearly reached the 14 day limit and were starting to pull up stakes (quite a lot of them) but they were quiet and well mannered. Normally a family place, I was a bit surprised to see a couple of nice looking chicks skinny dipping at the swimming hole, but it isn't forbidden there and we have actually done it ourselves on hot nights (and after dark).

The rainbow people were pretty much cleared out by the end of our weekend there, but they left behind a few things they built that were of some use, and a lot of good firewood.

It's Colorado - Routt Natl Forest, didn't it say? That's the Steamboat Springs area.

They used to be near Taos/Angel Fire, NM, for a few years, (where I encountered them at least once) but I think Steamboat has been hdqrs for a while now.

LOL. An alternative universe of black flies and no-see-ums. In the Allagash woods you fish with one hand on your fishing pole and the other hand swatting flies. Bring plenty of fly repellent or moose piss.

Law enforcement rangers have guns and pepper spray, and probably shotguns in their vehicles.

They didnt need those, however, all they needed to do was chase the hippies with water hoses, soap, and scrub brushes.

To a Hippie, soap and water is like crosses to vampires.

Nope, Clark is about 25 miles north of Steamboat Springs on the way up to Hahn's Peak. It's a beautiful drive. Clark pretty much consists of a combination general store-post office with a great ice cream selection. Well worth the trip if you are in the area.

Jeez everyone here seems to be uneducated about the "rainbow people" Yes I agree... some of them are pot smokin hippies but!!! a large part of people who attend are normal non-drug using people. Many churches attend as an outreach and the whole purpose of the gathering is to advocate peace. Now that is also considering that there will be those few idiots that ruin it for everyone by being violent, those people are few and far between and are not encouraged in any way. Theres always another side to the story and the things that the media prints are rarely true (as we all know)

Doesn't that say that a large crowd can do what they want?

In the absence of firearms, a big enough mob can do exactly what it wants without fear. Which is why the Left is so keen to ban firearms, since intimidation-via-mob is how they get their way.

There are pepper spray pellets what can be fired by paint ball guns. The Forest Service weenies should invest in some

If you don't get impatient and surround the mob and gradually start separating them, I would think they can be stopped. In this case a "sorry guys, the party is over. Thank your disruptive friends" as all were escorted away would have worked.

I didn't say the word "hippie". I said nudity (true, there are stark naked people anywhere you look unless it's cold), rampant drug use (true, there's a smokey haze from the weed being smoked), and filth. I didn't mention, but it is true, that people have sex not privately.

Friends have gone, some go every year, do to outreach. I've been told what it's like many, many times.

He may have hung out with them but he told them the truth - that they needed to change their lives and their hearts. He didn't say "there, there, you're fine just as you are".

And what does that have to do with the topic at hand?

I don't "hate" hippies, and I don't think that people who aren't so-called hippies are saints or great people just because of their external characteristics either.

But facts is facts.
