Did this take place in Maine? Those Rainbow kids are wacky, but fun to hang with in Northern Maine. It's an alternative universe.

It's Colorado - Routt Natl Forest, didn't it say? That's the Steamboat Springs area.

They used to be near Taos/Angel Fire, NM, for a few years, (where I encountered them at least once) but I think Steamboat has been hdqrs for a while now.

LOL. An alternative universe of black flies and no-see-ums. In the Allagash woods you fish with one hand on your fishing pole and the other hand swatting flies. Bring plenty of fly repellent or moose piss.

Nope, Clark is about 25 miles north of Steamboat Springs on the way up to Hahn's Peak. It's a beautiful drive. Clark pretty much consists of a combination general store-post office with a great ice cream selection. Well worth the trip if you are in the area.
