LOL! I do have a working knowledge of music. I've always been a music buff, and that's why I chose being a radio disc jockey for a career choice when I turned 16. :)

Although there is some dispute over the song "Sixteen Candles". The Platters also sang that song, as did Roy Orbison, but I much prefer version done by The Crests.

I'll take this to FR mail --- but it's the Crests. No dispute.

English became the lingua franca in Indianapolis, Cincinatti and Milwaukee within days of the beginning of WWI.
Germans, however, were not subjected to mass roundups and the confiscation of property. A handful of German-American politicians were imprisoned by Woodrow Wilson for the duration of the war.
"W" should take note of what Wilso got away with.

No confiscation or roundups because it was not feasible. The "English" pushed the envelope as far as they could. San Antonio was still a "German" tow in 1917, with German families having a huge role in public affairs. That pretty much went away in a heartbeat.
Incidentally, Mexcians will not believe that in 1900 there were more German-speakers in San Antonio than either Spanish or English speakers. The once popular pronunciation of San Antonio as "San Antone" is an Anglicization of "Sankt Anton. "

If you get back to the immigration debates in the Senate, Senator Hagel really got off on the question of what the status of English ought to be in the United States ~ and virtually nothing he said seemed to make sense UNLESS you came to realize he was talking about the possibility of reinstating German as the main language in many parts of the country.
Senator Lugar (and a number of others) definitely supported his position.
Guess that means there remains a German Fifth Column luring in the background of American politics.

Was the turning away of boatloads of Jews destined for extermination viewed, in the 1940s, as not being wrong?
Ofcourse those who knew what was going on knew it was wrong.
People were being condemned to death. It's hardly an appropriate comparison to interning Japanese. They were not being sentenced to death.

So, what newspaper did you drop?
