Rather To Be Gone From CBS BEFORE Contract Expires
Here is the latest from Black Rock and West 57th Street. Denying Dan has tried to avoid the ugly truth (Seems strange to refer to Dan Rather in a sentence containing the word “truth.”) …
As I was saying, Denying Dan has tried to avoid the ugly truth that no one at CBS wants to have anything to do with him. One senior staffer described Dan’s handling of the phony Bush story was “criminal,” and no one wants that label applied to them because of work with Rather.
CBS itself wants nothing to do with him. Rather begged to be allowed to go to Gulf Coast to cover post-Katrina damage. It was denied at every level.
He asked to go to Iraq and Afghanistan to cover conflicts there. Again, the answer; “Ain’t no way.”
Typical comments from VP level people were, “What if he purposefully got himself wounded, so he could come home a “victim-hero?” Another asked, “Would you ever risk our entire network again by putting him on the air live. He could say anything. We would have to have some 7-second delay like they have on the radio call-in shows so we could kill the audio if he goes whacko.”
The reply was “You mean goes whacko again?”
Rather’s last days were to be spent as a field reporter for 60 Minutes, but staffers there said they would not work with him. Staffers there do not want to be connected with him in any way.
Rather has a contract through November, but the public exit could come as early as next week. His “suits” are negotiating a severance package with the network “suits.” They are probably also hiring a good fiction writer to compose Dan’s retirement speech…. which will probably be attended by 8 guys looking for a free rubber chicken dinner.
One of the reasons he will be gone early, the network has to do SOMETHING to show they are still (supposedly) connected to Middle America and its feelings.
In case you wonder how low CBS Evening With Perky Katie can sink, the answer is “farther than you think.” The entire news staff is being moved to the basement cafeteria so carpenters can build a new news set for Mz. Couric.

They obviously do not want him around before/during the Nov. election,CBS probably got that request directly from the DNC.
Some say he is being blacklisted due to pressure from George Bush and Karl Rove.
Today's LA Times article has quotes from Gunga Dan. So far as I know, she's the only reporter to talk to him in the last couple of days...

They are. This isn't embarrassment, it's expedience. They realize that people have caught on to Dan, so they are throwing him under the bus.

They're only mad at Dan because he couldn't prove that what he said about Bush's service record WASN'T TRUE.
