Coulter Declares Sept. 11 Widows "Fair Game" June 8, 2006

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

You know me. I love to debate the issues. I like to play hardball and I admire people, on either side, who play it well.

But sometimes people go too far. And, in her latest book, the ever-acid-tongued Ann Coulter has done so again.

Billed as the third of a political trilogy, “Godless” is actually the third time Coulter has published the same mindless attacks on liberals under a different title. Only this time she adds a new target. Not content with sliming liberals, she also smears families of the victims of Sept. 11 — apparently saving crippled children and Iraq war amputees for her next book.

“I’ve never seen people enjoying their husbands’ deaths so much,” Coulter writes of women whose husbands were killed in the Twin Towers. By speaking out after Sept. 11, she charges, they have proved to be nothing but “self-possessed,” celebrity-seeking “broads.” We shouldn’t pay any attention to them, says Coulter, because: “How do we know their husbands weren’t planning to divorce these harpies?”

Coulter’s venom is aimed specifically at the most vocal and visible of the 9/11 widows — Kristen Breitweiser, Lorie Van Auken, Mindy Kleinberg and Patty Casazza — whom she dubs the “Witches of East Brunswick.” These four New Jersey women successfully organized victims’ families in pressuring President Bush to create a Sept. 11 Commission, which he initially opposed. Since then, they’ve been keeping the heat on Congress to adopt the commission’s recommendations.

In other words, the widows’ main mission since Sept. 11 has been trying to keep Americans safe from another terrorist attack. And for that public service they’re accused by Coulter of enjoying watching their husbands burn to death? How cruel can you get? As the four women said in response to Coulter’s poison: “There was no happiness in telling our children that their fathers were never coming home again.”

Coulter defends her vicious attacks on the Sept. 11 widows by arguing that, since they also endorsed John Kerry for president, Breitweiser and her pals are fair game for criticism. Well, that’s true, up to a point. In politics, everybody’s fair game. But just because the four women endorsed John Kerry, that doesn’t mean it’s OK to call them “professional victims” or accuse them of “enjoying their husbands’ deaths.” Even though that’s the specialty of Coulter and other right-wing ministers of hate — jumping from the political to the personal — it’s still way over the line.

Besides, what’s wrong with trying to convert a personal tragedy into better public policy? People do it all the time and, because of their suffering, often bring a better perspective on what changes are needed. Without the loss of his son Adam, John Walsh would never have become the nation’s number one crime fighter. Without the loss of his daughter Polly, Marc Klaas would not be leading searches for missing children. And without the loss of her son Casey, Cindy Sheehan could never have rallied a nation against the war in Iraq.

But, by Coulter’s logic, Walsh, Klaas and Sheehan, too, are nothing but glory hounds, exploiting their own victimhood. They are not to be taken seriously. Neither are Holocaust survivors, I guess. Coulter probably believes that they, too, enjoyed watching their loved ones die.

The ultimate contradiction, of course, is that a strong supporter of George Bush would accuse anybody else of trying to take political advantage of Sept. 11. It’s an irony not lost on MSNBC’s Keith Olberman, who railed against Coulter’s book: “All of this stated by a commentator who has staunchly, repeatedly, and enthusiastically defended an administration that began to politicize 9/11 within a month of the nightmare and has never paused for a moment since. . . . All of this stated by a commentator who is bitching that these 9/11 widows can’t be criticized while she is writing a book and going on TV and venomously criticizing them!”

In the end, however, albeit unintentionally, Coulter may have done us a favor by offering an insight into how Americans should react to tragedy. After Sept. 11, the women who lost their husbands organized to learn how such a nightmare could happen and how to prevent future attacks.

By contrast, on Sept. 12, 2001, Ann Coulter wrote: “We should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity.” How dare she accuse anyone else of being a witch?

I guess Press had to say something about this but it really comes out as nothing. I am guessing a guage on to how "right on" one is is how pissed off likes of Bill Press and Keith Olberman get.

Ann Coulter is on Drudge right now, demolishing this line of whining.

Her points:

1) She did not refer to 9-11 widows this way. She referred to four specific, very active, very loud, very liberal widows who refer to themselves as the "Jersey Girls".

2) By stating the unspeakable, she removes from them their veneer of untouchability. That the left often uses an appointed victim to advance their message - and she's simply pointing out the technique.

Seems to this poster, she did a pretty good job of it.

When he lies with the title, what more do you need to read?

Bill Press is a pathetic girlie-man who can't keep his head out of Keith Olberman's aXX. There, how's that for an informed and thoughtful rebuttal?

More seriously, Bill Press (and Olberman) are so thoroughly dishonest in everything they say that it's not worth the effort to take them apart. I will note, though, that Bill Press completely deceives the reader about the actual activities and political agenda of the 4 "Jersey Girls"..... I can't stand to watch any TV that has either Bill Press or Keith Olberdink on....

The truth hurts, and the libs are clearly in a lot of pain here. They're going to try to demonize Ann the same way they did Joe McCarthy and, basically, anybody who enjoys any notable success against them. We cannot let them get by with it. Ann's basic premise, i.e. the point she makes about libs ever wanting to use people with perceived extreme victim status to make their points, is well taken. It's a dastardly tactic and we need to call them on it.

The length the liberals go to when someone courageously tells the truth like Coulter - don't ever go to Arkansas, Ann!

I hope she continues to pound this point home, and continues to stand up to these wretches.

That statement is just one of many whoppers in this piece. Bill Press has a writing style that is reminiscent of Pravda or Radio Havana - wonder whether he studied their methods... It's transparent propaganda, Billy Boy. Nobody takes you seriously when you dish out such trash...

There's a difference. The Left believes in defeat. We believe in victory. Of course they can't be honest but we can't. So there's no debate from them because if they laid out what they believe on the table, the American people would lynch them.

Funny, Bill didn't think another guest on Hardball "went too far" when the guy went ballistic at the leader of the Swift Boat Vets.

The typical double standard.

Liberals play the professional victim game endlessly. The Jersey Girls, Cindy Sheehan, the father of that guy beheaded by terrorists - if somebody does something terrible, the liberals will find a loud-mouthed relative who is devoid of any semblance of class to use the tragedy to advance the liberal agenda.

Press doesn't really make any telling points in this hit piece. I enjoyed reading all his cheap shots, though. I never realized he was so catty. His cattiness betrays his impotence.

I mean, come on, Bill Press is the lowest form of humanity on the face of the Earth. He and "The Jersey Girls" scum and vermin should get along just fine. Maybe the Jersey Gals, Jamie Gorelick and Bill Press can have a liquid lunch together and celebrate Bill Clinton's murder of American innocents that occurred on September 11, 2001!!! Ann, baby, you are right on the money. These idiot women kissed Clinton's butt after he murdered their husbands and thousands of other American innocents!!! Go figure what morons they are!!! You know, I don't them bouncing all over TV as they once did. You know why? Because if they face Coulter, face to face, they will get eaten alive!!! The screams from the Democrat, liberal vermin is music to my ears. Ann, you hit them where it hurts the most!!! Sell a million books, Baby!!!

"They're going to try to demonize Ann the same way they did Joe McCarthy..."

It's their dream and the weak Republicans need to be flogged into defending her instead of helping the Dems do the dirty dead.

Of course these days I am never certain that the Republicans want to be more than one step to the right of the leftist Dems.

The 9-11 wives entered the political arena and are fair game for criticism. Adam Walsh and Polly Klaas were innocent victims of human brutality. Casey Sheehan chose to join the US military and fight for his country. John Walsh and Marc Klaas aren't perverting the memory of their loved ones. Cindy Sheehan is.

Ann Coulter is poking liberal worms with a stick, and watching them squirm. And I love it! Poor babies can dish it out, but just can't take it.

Um, I don't quite see the connection between Walsh/Klass and Sheehan/widows but I'm not a genius liberal like Press.

Olberman? Why would he go from being a moderately successful sports guy to a raving loser as a political "commentator".

I must have missed the Bill Press column on Debra Burlingame, whose brother Charles was the pilot of the plane that went into the Pentagon. Ooh....Maybe because she is a staunch Democrat and defends President Bush and started this thing with the Jersey Girls back in 2004.....!
