Kean migrates to Bush's right

Tom Kean Jr. doesn't think President Bush is telling the truth about amnesty for illegal immigrants.

Kean didn't say that about Bush yesterday. He said it about U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez. But it applies to Bush as well. Both Republican Bush and Democrat Me nendez support a bill now before the Senate that would let about 10 million illegal immigrants stay in the United States. Bush says that's not an amnesty. Yes it is, said Kean yesterday at a press conference in Jersey City with the Statue of Liberty in the background.

"Rewarding those who have broken our laws with a clear path to citizenship is amnesty," Kean said.

That, of course, is exactly what our president proposes. Last week, Kean seemed to endorse it. At a press conference in Trenton, he said that offering visas to illegals would permit them to "come out of the shadows." This week, he wants them to head for the border. If they want citizenship, they can apply in their home countries to enter legally. What happened to make Kean change his mind? Well, he's got a primary opponent, John Ginty, who has been hammering him on illegal immigration.

But a bigger factor, I suspect, was the harsh reaction among grassroots Republicans to the speech Monday night in which Bush made yet another plea for amnesty -- while insisting it's not amnesty. Though the media interpreted the speech as a largely successful effort by Bush to rally approval for the Senate bill, conservatives interpreted it as just this side of treason. The anti-Bush senti ment was unanimous on Phyllis Schlafly's Eagle Forum Web site. One guy even called for Bush's impeachment. When I phoned her, Schlafly did a quick autopsy on the speech.

Good news. Whether Kean is sincere or not, it shows that he wants to win.

Doesn't look like a carp to me. Maybe he's an actual conservative. Something we don't have in the White House.

While conservative/Republican reaction is STILL harsh, Kean wouldn't shift his position in space of a week in a Liberal state if the reaction wasn't equally as strong in the Dem grassroots. Not those like Kos that claim to be the grassroots, but the real thing.
