the mtDNA sequences from the nine neandertal specimens that have been analyzed to date ... do not match those found among modern humans, suggesting that little, if any, interbreeding took place.

This could be explained if Neanderthal women were exceedingly unappealing, and the only interbreeding that took place was between Neanderthal men and HS women.

Very interesting. Too bad its only 112 bp, but then its 100,000 years old so that's a great start.

Maybe they will be able to squeeze a bit more out of that tooth in time. The techniques are improving very quickly.

Most likely because modern women didn't care much for that "knock 'em over the head & drag 'em back to the cave" sort of dating scene. ;-)

But modern guys invented the "paper bag" to facilitate interbreeding attempts between them and Neandertal women. ;-)

I'm confused. How does the MtDNA from one specimen show any level of diversity, even when compared with later samples?

(This is a legit question for you geneticists. I'm a geologist myself...)

last I checked, we had only a paltry number of Neandertal specimen to study - something like 100 - of which only a dozen or so are relatively complete. I'd be a LOT happier with discussions concerning the "disappearance" of this advanced hominid if we had good comarative SOMATIC DNA assays to look at.
