Preserving a Vision (Thomas Sowell)
Townhall.com ^ | 5/30/06 | Thomas Sowell

Posted on 05/31/2006 5:30:28 PM PDT by Gordongekko909

In Shelby Steele's new book, "White Guilt," he mentions an encounter with a white liberal who fiercely defended the welfare state programs and policies of the 1960s.

"Damn it, we saved this country!" he all but shouted. "This country was about to blow up. There were riots everywhere. You can stand there now in hindsight and criticize, but we had to keep the country together, my friend."

Before we turn to facts, we need to understand the vision. This is a vision of the world more precious than gold. To those who believe it, this vision is a treasure beyond price because it is also a wonderful vision of themselves -- and they are not likely to give it up for anything so mundane as grubby facts.

Even liberal icon Sargent Shriver, head of the agency directing the "war on poverty," admitted that "venereal disease has skyrocketed" even though "we have had more clinics, more pills, and more sex education than ever in history."

You mean the 'rolling the condom on the banana class' didn't help?

"It is expecting an awful lot to expect them to consider any alternative vision of the world, especially one that shatters the beautiful picture of themselves as wise and compassionate saviors of society."

Folly in youth -- as regrettable as it is -- can perhaps be pardoned.

Continuing to be foolish in ones older years is not so easily excused.

Sowell is compulsory reading for all evangelical Christians. Many otherwise well-meaning Bible Christians buy into leftist feel good policies just because they are "more compassionate sounding".

Yeah, that was back before we realized that "girlfriends" were "bitches". </sarcasm>

Heavy recommendation on A Conflict of Visions. If you want something more philosophy and less economics than what he usually does, it rocks. Can be a little tough to get through if you aren't committed, though, because it's not as easy a read as some of his other works.

We are just now taking the boards off and the barriers down from the riots of the 60's here when in comes ACORN with their vison. All we need is food stamps, they say. Now they have Mexicans in the street, but this time we know where riots really come from.
