Conservatives Must Hold Firm On Immigration

The prevailing mentality among Beltway Republicans is that passage of an imperfect immigration bill before the November elections is better than no bill at all. They might just find out how wrong they are when they experience the inevitable conservative backlash.

Why do we have to be faced with these false choices? The enactment of an imperfect bill, even if it would help to preserve the Republican majority in November, would be a classic case of sacrificing the long-term good for short-term political benefit.

I strongly believe we need to preserve a Republican majority, even though that majority is often controlled by dictatorial moderates -- as in the Gang of 14, seven of which are Republicans. The election of a true Democratic majority would have potentially horrifying consequences on domestic and national security issues across the board.

But with the immigration, we're not talking about some little throwaway issue, but one whose resolution could determine whether this country will ultimately retain its national identity. If anything closely resembling the Senate bill becomes law, we will be stacking the decks against ourselves in what already promises to be a formidable struggle to preserve the unique American culture.

But with the immigration, we're not talking about some little throwaway issue, but one whose resolution could determine whether this country will ultimately retain its national identity..... While I agree that we can't allow the perfect to be the enemy of the good, we simply can't risk bargaining away the very identity of this nation on the illusory promise that holes in the bill will be patched over in time. If there isn't enough time to craft a nation-preserving bill before the election, there won't be afterwards either.

Fitting response to people that castigate us being willing to sacrifice the "greater good" (i.e. they believe electing any Republican that breathes) because we don't get our way on "one" issue.

This is about the survival of America herself. It surpasses even the Iraq war/WOT and judges, and I HAVE voted singularly on those issues before forgiving many sins because of them. I will brook no concession on thwe survival of our land that our soldiers have shed blood to protect. None. If Republicans sell her out and allow passage of that bill, then Democrats might as well handle the transition of America to her new caretakers from Mexico to the U.N.

Having said these things, I don't accept the premise that failure to pass a deeply flawed bill is politically suicidal for Republicans. If you believe that, you probably believe the conventional wisdom that elections are controlled by the mushy middle.

McCain's in for a rude awakening on this faulty premise hoardes of weak inactive liberals are going to cruise him to victory.

To the contrary, the Republicans who have been most successful in national elections are those who have held firm on conservative principles. Unlike the base of the Democratic Party, the Republican base is not fringe or extreme, but mainstream conservative. Those who want to preserve the unique American culture and the English language are not extremists, nativists or racists, which shouldn't even have to be said.

Yet apparently it does need to be said, as even the President I supported for six years believes me to be so.

Much of the reason the Republican Senate is so disappointing to conservatives is that the moderate and liberal tail is wagging the conservative dog. The McCain moderates are hamstringing conservatives -- and even some of the conservatives have lost their nerve.

To their shame. Their obligation isn't to fold to "civility" (liberalism, the President or the NYT's. Their obligation is to fight, even if they aren't in the winning column.

Let principled conservatives try on their obstructionist hats for a change. In this case, for now, passing no bill is better than passing the Senate bill. They should have the courage to take their case to the voters in November.

Exactly. The Senate Reps should have attempted a filibuster, rather then passing it off to the House. As Sessions said some of them that knew this was wrong did vote for it oon assumption the House would kill it. Had they shown guts they could have joined Sessions to filibuster the legislation and proven their worth. Now it is left to the House to save all their sorry hides.

Oh no, no, not all. A bill that will bring, um, 60% of the population of Mexico into the United States on a permanent basis (about 60 million people) along with, oh you know, another 60 or 70 million from Latin America and the Far East, in the space of 20 years....no big deal at all.

People is just people, right!?

I mean, adding 100 - 120 million ethnic, cultural and political aliens to the population in the space of a couple of decades...no problem!! Anyone who opposes...clearly just a damn racist...a meanie...a hater....A XENOPHOBIC NEANDERTHAL!!

After all, We are the World. We are the Weird. We are.... INSANE if we ever let this monstrosity become law!!

House bill or no bill IMHO. Secure the border and stop the flow first, the we'll talk.

What good is a fancy set of turnstiles if you don't put up the velvet rope?

Yet even you are forced to mention it, even if parenthetically.

Time to get serious! Illegal is always illegal. Let's move fast forward for those who wait in line. No citizenship to those who are born here by way of illegal parent entry - still illegal.
Penalize those who would employ illegals.
Get identifying system working tied into social security. a little fingerprint tied in and you know who is who. Social security does its job of identifying last reported employer when someone is checking on validity of applicant. No more 150 employees with same name and social.
No more greater benefits to illegals than US citizens - example in-state tuition treatment for illegals but not those from other states.

People seem to like that tagline. I've gotten lots of comments about it, if the Senate had sense that would worry them...LOL

Another thing we can do for the country...

http://www.electjohnjacob.com/2.0/johnjacob.php

Help elect John Jacob, or at least make the race competitive. I sent a check this morning. If the incumbent open border Republican has to fight to keep his seat over this issue it will further stiffen House spines. I'd prefer to replace him outright though.

A republican stategerist claims that conservatives are "in favor" of a comprehensive solution to immigration reform.

It all depends on just what do you mean "comprehensive".

If you mean we can haggle and haggle and haggle, appoint a commission, haggle some more and then wrap it up with a bow after a few years, then NO!

If you mean we start moving YESTERDAY to build a barrier were we need to and to bolster the human resources everywhere else, and after that work is well under way, only THEN do we start to debate what to do with everyone who got past where the fence is, well yes, I guess I am "in favor" of a comprehensive solution.

If we could only deport them to the country they want this one to become.

I contributed a few hundred to Throckmorton's campaign last time around and was gratified to see Cannon have to blow a few hundred thousand just to keep his seat.

So I guess I gotta help Mr. Jacob!

Come to think of it, I think I remember this guy since I lived in Utah in the '70s...when he was in real estate.

Hell, this bill won't even get the Pubs any short term benefits.

Thanks for posting this column. Good Read. David Limbaugh tends to write pretty good columns. I really agree with him stating the obvious, that no bill at this point is a heck of a lot better than a bad bill (like what the Senate passed) becoming law.

I heard his brother on his radio show today reading some column from the "American Spectator" stating that we should first seal off the border and stop the flow of illegals, then once the flow of illegals has been "certified" to be stopped, then grant amnesty to those already here illegally.

That is the new spin that the open borders/pro-amnesty crowd is trying out. Now that they know "immediate" amnesty is all but dead, they are trying out their new "delayed" amnesty pitch, that they (I have no idea whom) would first somehow certify that the flow of illegals is shut off, then grant amnesty to those already here.

I believe that Conservatives and the American People at large will not support "delayed" amnesty any more than they will support "immediate" amnesty.

I'm not even certain which country they want. They have a fascination with castro, admire the eite corrupt ruling class in Mexico, and drool over Europe's socialistic model. I'd be happy to ship them to Cuba, Mexico or France. If they'd just make up their minds as to which they consider Utopia.

They probably wouldn't want mexico, though, they actually enforce their laws on the border.

Good for you.

Apparently that last tight campaign scared him a bit and he moderated his open borders stance ublically with a few votes, but he's still an amnesty wolf in conservative sheep cloth.

he deserves to go down this time. Hopefully his constituents are going to realize that and remove him.

How did we get in a situation where the House needs to stand firm in order to get the President to do 1) what he has the sole sworn duty and the unilateral power to do (defend the border, and yes militarily if need be), 2) what is popularly demanded by an overwhelming majority of the public and of "his" own conservative base, and 3) what is entirely prudent given 9-11 and the WOT?

The President had prior feedback that an amnesty bill by itself might not pass the Conservative wing. So now the idea advanced is a comprehensive bill that couples protecting the border (very popular) with an amnesty program (very unpopular). That approach makes it a legislative agenda rather than an executive one and appears to kick the can further out in time. The President has worked to make inroads into Hispanic and Black and Catholic voting blocks traditionally won by Democrats. It's generally a good thing to widen the tent and appeal to as many voters as possible, but with Katrina and Amnesty the widening has come at the expense of Conservative principles.

A suspicious mind might also note that this could be a plan to transcend the Conservatives and weather the backlash while the Rats are weak and stuck on leftist stupid. More frightening would be the notion that the President is obstinately refusing to do his job (secure the border) unless he gets his way (Amnesty).

How right you are. They are doing their best to turn this country into a little of all three combined.
