POLICE sent reinforcements to the troubled suburbs of northern Paris yesterday after a night of rioting revived fear of a return to the violence that raged through Frances immigrant housing estates last year.
In another sign of continuing racial tension, the Government also ordered an inquiry into an anti-Semitic black group that staged an aggressive march through the Jewish quarter of the capital.
Seven policemen were injured on Monday night in the town of Montfermeil. Rubber bullets and stun grenades were fired at youths, many of whom were masked and wielding baseball bats. About 100 youths hurled projectiles and petrol bombs at police and public buildings and attempted to storm the home of Xavier Lemoine, the towns Mayor. The violence was sparked by the arrest of a suspect over the beating of a bus driver.
The violence spread into neighbouring Clichy-sous-Bois, the flashpoint for last years riots. Two youths were electrocuted there in October while hiding from police in an electricity sub-station.
Riot police were deployed in force in both centres last night, but there was no violence other than a firebomb being thrown into a police vehicle.
Dominique Perben, the Transport Minister, called the incident a reminder of last years riots, in which 10,000 vehicles and 200 public buildings were torched. The question of the suburbs is a question for the entire political class, he said. We must have the courage to look things in the face.
More than 400 people were jailed after the riots, but community leaders have complained that little has been done to address the problems facing the estates.
Montfermeil has been a focus of tension since M Lemoine decreed a bylaw last month that banned teenagers from circulating in groups of more than three. A court quashed the bylaw after protests from civil liberties groups.
Politicians and Jewish organisations united yesterday in condemning the acts of the so-called Tribu KA black supremacy group that intimidated passers-by last Sunday in the Rue des Rosiers, the Jewish quarter in the Marais district.

Ping!
Country circling the drain alert.
And the beat goes on.....
Isn't this a different group from last time? I thought it was Algierians and Moroccans last time.
Then again, the media is usually so careful not to characterize the criminals by any ethnic identifiers.
"The violence was sparked by the arrest of a suspect over the beating of a bus driver."
Translation: How dare you French attempt to punish us when we break the law. Us Muzlim yoots will riot and burn down the city to protest this obvious upholding of the law.
What is this then...take four? Will they keep being allowed to riot till they get it right?
As despicable as Jacques-Strap and his regime are, better that they win than the "African" Muslim thugs.
Strap needs to start acting like he has some balls. But he probably never will.
That hardly counts as violence, right?
I believe only the TimesUK could put it that way...correct me if I'm wrong.
FMCDH(BITS)
I was rather charmed with the euphemism "anti-Semitic black gangs".
Don't tell me the Fwench have the Nation of Islam over there with their real Muslims too!
Quelle dommage!
Think about how big that number.
For me, it would be like burning every single car in my home town.
Yeah, but most of what they're burning are things like Renaults, Peugeots and Citröens. It's not like they're burning real cars, or something that anyone would miss.
I hope that they burn the place to the ground. This will serve as a wake to call as to what is in store for the rest of Europe if they continue to worship at the alter of multiculturalism and uncontrolled immigration.
Good point. I've had two of the three. Many times I considered firebombing them myself...
It was my understanding from posters here during the last go round that the burning of vehicles is a nightly occurance and once the numbers had dropped to around 100 a night things had somehow returned to "normal"
Funny you should ask -- look here: Extremists terrorize Jews in Paris
"Tribu-Ka's leader is Kemi Seba, formerly known as Stellio Gilles Robert, a former member of Nation of Islam in Paris who has previously been indicted for racist incitement."
LOL!
