It's a good bet now that there won't be any law to legalize illegal aliens - at least before next fall's election. As many Republicans see it.....(the Senate) Democratic amnesty bill....would amount to political suicide..... House Republicans are dead-set against legalization, convinced that backing Bush's plan would so infuriate conservatives that they'd sit out the election and let Democrats win control of Congress.
The Senate can't pass the bill alone, so as long as the House holds firm, any compromise bill won't include legalization......
Karl Rove got an earful when he tried to persuade House Republicans yesterday - 19 of the 20 who spoke out said no way to legalization......"It was a very cool reception. House Republicans like King say their voters, by a 99-1 margin, would rather see nothing than allow an amnesty.

They stall a few months, get reelected then pass the bill. No big deal for them.
The decision on immigration is too important to leave to the politicians who have enormous pressures on them.
The decision belongs to the people.
The people MUST vote on this.
IMO Bush should halt all immigration and all citizenship, and call for a nation wide vote.
An issue this important should not be demagogued by politicians for political advantage.

I can't understand why President Bush can't see the forest from the trees on this issue. Is there some dirty little family secret that Vicente Fox is blackmailing him with? Or is it some mandate he is getting from the global elitists and multinational corporations? I'm very confused with his tin ear on this very important issue.
This excuse is continually trotted out to justify the latest legislative atrocity, and shows how stupid the Members (and Mr. Rove) think we are.

Lookit, we're all cynical about politics. In this case, anti-invader is a consensus issue that cuts across every sector of the political spectrum. If LI Cong King says 99-1 oppose amnesty, you know it's almost DOA.
Now you see the fallacy of having Senators elected only every 6 years. They feel they can do a thy like instead of the wishes of the people.
That's what I'm thinking lately. All the local jurisdictions should send their problem illegals to Washington DC by bus and release them in front of the Capitol.
Ah BUT there is still 2008.
In a government "of the people, by the people, and for the people" all politicians should be limited to two-year terms so the people could fire those who are doing a poor job every two years. Judges should also stand for election, including Supreme Court justices. We either have elected government or we don't. This quasi-democracy only leads to dissatifaction of the people who correctly feel that special interests are in charge of our government.
Note to 43: Yeah. Secure the border. Enforce the law.

I don't know enough about it it, but the other day another poster mentioned a 'big' picture aspect to Mexico and Fox and it is worth thinking about... here's what I deduced...
Next elections in Mexico pit 2 parties together and the socialists could win. As is happening in South America, they are doing it by promising social programs that the democracy advocates cannot, thereby winning power. If we drastically reduce (by immigration reform) how Mexican workers are able to send American dollars back home, then things become worse in Mexico and it opens the road for the socialists to have a winning platform at election time.
Can someone add more to this?
So in this respect, I can see where Bush is thinking BIG picture to keep this from allowing more influence from China/Chavez etc at our southern border.
Now, lets turn that white elephant Amtrack into the Deportation Express.
