Montenegro Deeply Split Ahead of Vote

BUDVA, Serbia-Montenegro - Voters are deciding whether to write the final chapter in the breakup of the former Yugoslavia, and the T-shirts show vividly how divided they are.

Sunday's referendum is about whether tiny Montenegro should end its union with big-brother Serbia, and in the Adriatic resort of Budva, vendor Milan Jakic says his red "da" (yes) shirts are selling well. "If you compare the sale of yes and no," he says, "there is no doubt Montenegro will be independent."

But six miles away in the quiet fishing village of Bigovo, the "ne" (no) shirt is doing well, and graffiti painted on a dock says: "This is not Montenegro, this is Serbia."

For lots of reasons Montenegro should remain federated with Serbia...same people, mostly same religion, and same cultural identity.

Of course Milo Djukanovic considers himself a survivor...and a pal of the Clintonistas...well like mafiosos everywhere they don't last very long and he should think seriously about that.

Agree, but the polls are looking like the independence group had won -- although it is very, very close.

Ironic -- Yahoo shows photos of both, an old guy dressed in the full ancient Montenengrin garb voting "Yes" -- and Albanian Muslims voting "Yes". When in fact, if that old Montnengrin guy were true to the heritage of what he was wearing, he'd be planting Muslim heads on stakes in the town-square.

Yahoo photos are already showing photos of the Montenegrin coastline and saying that "it has long been known as the Albanian Riviera" -- yeah, right.

Whatever way it goes, hope that Montenegrins understand what they are in for!

Yes, I read that. That is one of the reasons I said that it looked like "independence" won, but it will be some hours before it is confirmed.

Albanian riviera...ha!

Of course the BBC's biased reportage and predilection for rewriting history doesn't help any.

Now that the former Commie Djukanovic has gotten his wish, like the Stalinists in the Tito apparatus who are today's Bosnian Social Democrats, will they manifest the same taste for corruption, abuse of individual rights, public incivility toward opponents, and authoritarian decision-making?
