Haemophiliac joins Clinton demo

Protesters want a public inquiry into the use of infected blood products A man from Sussex who was infected with HIV and Hepatitis C while being treated for a blood disorder is taking part in a protest in front of Bill Clinton. The man, a haemophiliac, was treated with infected clotting agents in the 1970s when many of the blood products used came from the United States.

The former President was governor of Arkansas, where haemophiliacs say blood was collected from high-risk prisoners.

The Department of Health says the UK government acted in good faith.

The Sussex protester, who does not want to be named, received treatment with Factor 8 which was intended to save his life.

But he was diagnosed with HIV and Hepatitis C at 14.

Donors screened

"I needed Factor 8 because I was in pain, but in being given that treatment I was given a death sentence," he said.

He travelled to Glasgow, where Mr Clinton is addressing 800 business people, to join Wednesday's protest.

Today, blood donors are screened so that blood is no longer taken from high-risk groups such as drug users.

But the affected haemophiliacs are calling for a public inquiry into how they came to be infected.

The Department of Health said: "We are aware that during the 1970s and 80s blood products were sourced from prisoners in the US.

"An ex-gratia payment is available to every person who was alive on 29 August 2003 and whose Hepatitis C infection was due to NHS treatment with blood or blood products received before September 1991.

"The Government of the day acted in good faith, relying on the technology available at that time, and therefore we do not feel a public inquiry would provide any real benefit to those affected."

No. Your death sentence was just moved up.

Everybody dies, kiddo. Take the philosophical train out. There's peace on it.

The govt of Arkansas didn't act in good faith. They continued to ship tainted blood after it was well known that it was dangerous to do so. There won't be an inquiry because Bill Clinton and some of his cronies would wind up in prison.

As WorldNetDaily reported, Bill Clinton was at the center of a scandal in Arkansas in the 1980s involving the sale of AIDS-tainted blood to Canada, which was distributed through the Red Cross.

As governor of Arkansas, Clinton awarded a contract to Health Management Associates to provide medical care to the state's prisoners. The president of the company was a long-time friend and political ally of Clinton and later was appointed by him to the Arkansas Industrial Development Commission. Later, he was among the senior members of Clinton's 1990 gubernatorial re-election team.

The death toll from the tainted blood has grown since the figure of 3,000 was calculated in 1997, but recent estimates are not available, the Associated Press reported.

Duplessis said the organization accepted responsibility for "having distributed harmful products for those that rely on us for their health."

There is no statute of limitations on murder.

Clinton and his Arkansas buddies could still get their desserts.

Didn't realize that Arkansas blood made its way to the UK.

There are enough victims in Canada for a class action suit.

Wonder why the victims - or their families - have not taken action.

I don't like to pass up a legitimate opportunity to bash Bill Clinton, but the HIV and Hep C viruses were unidentified at that time and so could not have been screened out of donated blood.

sorry, that's not true, it was well known that surrogate markers and liver enzyme AST's and ALT's could screen out many tainted donations. In fact the hep B test was highly effective in screening out HIV as many people that had HIV also had HBV. These tests were routinely ignored at the Arkansas prison during the 1980's and many positive HBV prisoners were allowed to continue to donate because they would switch their 'pig tail' blood sample with another prisoners blood to pass the test. Records were also altered by prisoners to continue to let infected prisoners to donate. Its well documented from FDA reports at the time.

"sorry, that's not true, ..."

I'm not disputing that there is a legitimate scandal regarding the donation of contaminated blood from Arkansas prisoners in the 1980's. What I was pointing out is that *this particular* protester ("...who was infected with HIV and Hepatitis C ... in the 1970's") can't definitively blame Bill Clinton's negligence for his infections because (1) HIV and HCV viruses weren't identified at that time and - since you brought it up - (2) screens for HBV did not eliminate HIV and HCV from donated blood. There are many HIV-infected transfusion recipients who were infected in the early 1980's *despite* receiving HBV-screened blood.

Clinton is guilty, at least, of reckless endangerment.

By 1982 the CDC had pointed out the connection between HIV and Factor 8

1982 * CDC (USA) links the new disease to blood."Epidemiologic Notes and Reports Possible Transfusion-Associated Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) -- California

Update on Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) among Patients with Hemophilia A, MMWR Weekly, December 10, 1982 / 31(48);644-6,652 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention

Randal Morgan, who was deputy director of the department of corrections from 1981 to 1996, said: " It would be ludicrous that Bill Clinton did not know that the plasma program was experiencing problems.". . .

DENNIS BUECKERT, CANADIAN PRESS, NOV 21, 2003 - Canada continued to receive blood from an Arkansas prison in the 1980s long after serious safety problems at the facility had been exposed, new evidence indicates. Material gathered by Arkansas filmmaker Kelly Duda shows that, after evidence of contamination emerged in 1983, the prison blood centre simply set up a new subsidiary, with a different name, and continued shipping blood to Canada.

Even if HIV were not transmitted through prisoners' blook, Hepatitis was.
