WASHINGTON, May 10 (Reuters) - The U.S. government posted a larger-than-expected $118.85 billion federal budget surplus in April on strong government receipts, a Treasury Department report showed on Wednesday.

The April surplus compared with a $57.71 billion surplus in April 2005.

Wall Street economists polled by Reuters were expecting a $90 billion budget surplus for April.

The cumulative deficit for the first seven months of fiscal 2006, which began Oct. 1, was $184.14 billion, below the $236.92 billion deficit in the first seven months of fiscal 2005.

April outlays fell to $196.24 billion from $219.90 billion in April 2005, while receipts were $315.09 billion, up from $277.61 billion in April a year ago.

Receipts for the fiscal year to date were $1.353 trillion, the highest on record for the first seven months of the fiscal year, a Treasury official said.

You have to tax everybody to death to have budget surpluses! Don't these people watch CNN or read the New York Times???

If you take out the hurricane you would have a surplus now.

The shame of it is that the economy is doing great now and the media is trying to kill it with the gas price fixation.

The tax cuts are bringing back receits into the economy and the defecit will be history.

The great economy will not help bush though.

We could have a surplus next year and everyone would still hammer bush on spending.

Bush has cut 100 programs last year, passed cuts in the budget, took heat for not spending more on katrina, wanted to cut social security and all he gets is hell from conservatives.

Bush is still getting blamed for that medicare bill three years ago.

The spending cuts and tax cuts are working but yet conservatives are slamming big spending bush.

Guess who will get all the credit for the surpluses on the way? Hillary Rodham will just like bubba did.

When Bubba came into office the economy was starting to take off with high GDP and when bubba left gdp was negative.

I have to give the clintons credit for one thing, they have great timing.

Ya. I see Bushville's springing up around here too. They all seem to be 5 bedroom 3-1/2 bath shacks.

He's taking hell because he is not willing to do anything about the big ILLEGAL ALIEN problem that seems to be sucking up dollars out of public healthcare and welfare budgets faster than Ted Kennedy working on a bottle of Chivas Regal.

Outstanding! Now the Congressional dems and RINO's can waste even more money, thus insuring a Republican defeat in November. More money is not a good thing for government.

a larger-than-expected $118.85 billion federal budget surplus in April on strong government receipts

... thanks in part to the $114.00 for Self-Employment Tax sent in by my 15-year-old son. I doubt they were counting on that.

(It was a surprise—and a lesson on taxation—for my son, too. ;)

So long as FICA is dumped into a 'general fund' for legislators to write checks upon (read IOUs), there is no real surplus, just as there was no actual surplus during the clinton years. Not counting IOUs is a politician's dirty trick played during every election cycle.
