PIN OIL PRICES ON THE DONKEYS
http://www.nypost.com/postopinion/letters/68256.htm ^ | 5/10/06 | EDITORIALS

THE ISSUE: Recent polls identify whom the public holds responsible for high gas prices ("Gas-Pump Blues," Dick Morris, PostOpinion, May 8).

****....it is the Democratic Party that has blocked oil exploration in Alaska and on the Atlantic and Pacific shelves. President Bush's all-around weakness is demonstrated by his utter failure to pin the blame on the donkey. New Rochelle

***** Morris' criticism of the oil companies makes it look like he's been watching Bill O'Reilly. Blaming big oil for Iranian saber-rattling, Nigerian rebels blocking oil shipments and Islamists blowing up Iraqi pipelines demonstrates the negative supply-side impact. On the demand side, world economic growth is created by increased Chinese and Indian demand for energy as they grow. Neither of these factors can, or should, be blamed on U.S. oil companies. Naturally, Congressmembers will drive to Capitol Hill in their SUVs to hold hearings to publicly chastise the oil industry. Congress, which has made everyone dependent on overseas oil supplies from Third-World dictatorships by restricting energy production in the United States, should not be surprised by this result. What is surprising is that this energy crisis did not occur a decade ago. Wichita, Kan.

*****The have-nots will always blame the haves for not having. Regardless of whether there is any truth to the situation, poorer people generally believe richer people achieve success through the exploitation of the poor. Columbia, S.C.

Let's not forget to mention that Xlintoon vetoed the ANWAR drilling bill. He also "gave away" Prudhoe Bay Oil, Food and the promise of Nuc electric generator plants to the North Koreans i they would eschew building Nuc weapons! Another failed farce that carved up our energy independence.

Nothing gets Democrats angry more than pointing out that they really like high gasoline prices. Algore said so in his book.

High fuel prices = less consumption = less pollution

And if we find other sources of oil, i.e. additional drilling here in the US, then supply is increased and there isn't the need for alternate fuels, more efficient use, etc.

It's ANWR. Not ANWAR. I see too many people using the wrong acronym and it irks me.

Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. ANWR.

It really started with the left-lib anti-nuclear power hysteria of the 1970s. What a different world it would be had we developed ample civilian nukes.

Exactly.

High gas prices are God's gift to the Republican Party, if they just have the wit and grit to pick it up and run with it.

Dems and their minions have blocked every possible energy project they ever saw, drilling, pipelines, power plants, refineries, if it has anything to do with energy, they are against it, they will vote to make it harder, more expensive, they will organize to stop it or shut it down any way they can.

We should take their record on energy and wrap it around their necks.

Instead, Repubs are trying to hide on this one, hoping to just slip in unnoticed dressed like Dems, walking like Dems, making Dem-like comments, maybe they can sneak into office and everyone will just accidently vote for them thinking they're Dems too.

Dem strategy on energy is to blame our current state of affairs on the people who generate what energy we have, rather than draw attention to the people who do everything earthly possible to stop them, which would be themselves. For Repubs to buy in to that strategy is suicidal, it is self-destructive stupidity, and if the consequences weren't so huge I would say that they deserve to self-destruct. They do deserve to self-destruct, but I don't deserve it.

Disagree.

Blame China and India. Blame the political instability in the world. Blame hurricanes.

The truth is that this situation profoundly demonstrates that oil (as a fuel source for cars) is no longer a viable long term solution for America. The explosive demand of oil from China and the future demands of India will keep the screws on oil for the foreseeable future. Drilling and pumping will only help in the short term. The Alaska Pipeline is pumping something like half of what it was a decade ago. ANWR would not begin to cover even that deficeit. Peak oil is becoming a reality due to increased demand worldwide

It is time (High time in my opinion) to think SERIOUSLY about alternatives, and reduce our dependance on oil. America must be able to keep the economy going if our suppliers go south on us. It is our strategic and economic future at stake. Blaming the Libs, or even the Chinese will not have any effect on fuel prices, nor will it pump more oil.

Pardon my left pinky! Have you ever been to the ANWR?

I've been there and even watched the annual caribou migration! Met a muskox and photoed a white fox family which came around the cook shack every day for a hand out.

ANWR vs ANWAR...phooey!

Who will soon be drilling for oil off the coast of Cuba while Dims continue to block drilling off of the sacred coast of Florida.

It irks me to read posts from robot spell checkers. ANWAR ANWR potatoe potato it's all fine with me...Try sticking to the subject Webster. Let's see our RINO Congress and Senate start pushing the issue instead of the pork.

What did you and the muskox talk about?

It was spring time on the North Slope and the wildflowers added color and sparkle to the tundra. The ptarmagans were mating and the muskox were pleased to be in Alaska having been brought to ANWR by the Soviets to help populate this magnificent animal whose Alaskan herds had been decimated by poor hunting policy.

You had to be there!!!

Okay. I watch a lot of nature programming, but never saw a talking muskox, so I was unsure! :)

betcha didn't know that Muskox are fully conversant in 'skimo! Of course, having emigrated from Siberia it also spoke Russian and a smattering of German. What I found most interesting was that this Muskox's family remembered Lara!

From your keyboard to the ears of everyone in the WH, RNC, Congress, etc.!!!! This is what I've been saying to everyone I know :^) ----- the Demagogues and their lunatic 'envirowhackos' have done all they can to wreck energy production in this country, and now they want to whine about prices. If the Republicans cannot make this a successful campaign issue for free markets and unshackling energy producers then the Rs do not deserve to be a political party!! (unfortunately, we all have to live with the consequences, so let's hope this issue is addressed properly in the coming months).
