Immigrants Panicked by Rumors of Raids
NY Times ^ | April 29,2006 | NINA BERNSTEIN

False rumors of random federal immigration raids have sent panic through immigrant communities around the country this week, emptying classrooms, work sites and shopping areas and sending thousands of people into hiding.

Towns in New Jersey and on Long Island have been among those most affected by the snowballing fear, say immigrant advocates and public officials, who described terrified mothers pulling their children from a Head Start program in Freehold, N.J., and deserted streets in usually bustling areas of West Hempstead, N.Y.

Yeah, sucking us dry on the headstart program and LOOK at the PERCENTAGES HERE:

"In Madison, Wis., where fears spiked on Monday, one-third to one-half of Latino pupils stayed home, school officials estimated, and groundless accounts that federal authorities had demanded workers' identification at local businesses, including Wal-Marts, kept many adults at home. In South Florida, construction sites emptied by midweek, and a high-risk pregnancy clinic found its immigrant patients canceling appointments in droves."

Geesh!

About 10 years ago, my mom worked for the local head start program (in the office). In one of the towns they oversaw that had a classroom in it was a meat packing town. They had to dedicate one of the 3 classrooms to children who had english as a second language. They had to hire a spanish speaking person to oversee that area. You always knew that ICE had been around and done a raid because one day, over half the class would just be gone. They were ususally gone a couple weeks, but they never filled their spots with other kids, because, eventually they returned!! I could go ON and ON and ON!!

"deserted streets in usually bustling areas of West Hempstead, N.Y."

west hempstead is a long island community of single family houses - there are no bustling areas. the streets are always deserted. on long island only the shopping malls bustle.

more ny times disinformation.

Gee I didn't notice either. I thought that if the illegal immigrants didn't work our whole country would fall to pieces, our economy would plummet, houses wouldn't get built, there would be no produce in the supermarkets and our lawns would be overgrown.

"...emptying classrooms..."

Last week the Madison, WI schools had a 40% drop in Latino attendance. Same rumors were going around here about the ICE raids.

Later in the week a woman from the Madison School Board said they DO NOT have any count whatsoever of how many illegal kids they have in the Madison School District. They have no way of "asking" for this information. Ha!

Figures. Friggin' Dane County Socialists use my money to pay for educating illegals...and it's been that way for years in that Sanctuary City. :(

I grew up in West Hempstead and I sure don't remember any areas as "bustling."

Yesterday a parcel was delivered to my business by one of the main carriers in the country. I asked the driver if they were working on Monday. He said that they were. Their supervisor had convened a meeting of the drivers and told them they were expected to turn up for work on Monday and to ignore this nonsense. Whereupon several drivers had taken umbrage at the term nonsense so the supervisor recanted and said he hoped they would all report for work on Monday.

Sheesh.......

First of all, they are not 'immigrants' and/or 'illegal immigrants'; they are illegal aliens.

Secondly, this country (and predecessor) built itself and thrived for nearly 400 years before the invasion of short-order cooks, nannies & gardeners.

With the price of gasoline rising, maybe more families will stay home & eat, secondary incomes might not be that great in comparison to energy costs, so someone will stay home to watch the kids, and dads/teens will re-discover the joys (and excercise) of mowing the lawn.

What will our brave, nation builders do then?
