Immigration debaters trade barbs at UTA
STAR-TELEGRAM ^ | Apr. 28, 2006 | PATRICK McGEE

ARLINGTON — A University of Texas at Arlington professor who has advocated for illegal immigrants took on a conservative commentator on Friday who argued that immigration of a large number of Hispanics, especially from Mexico, is bad for America.

Professor Jose Angel Gutierrez, founder of UT-Arlington’s Center for Mexican-American Studies, and Jared Taylor, editor of American Renaissance, a conservative publication that advocates for Anglos squared off in a campus debate sponsored by the College Republicans.

About 375 people who arrived to watch the debate waited to be scanned by police with metal-detecting wands. University spokesman Bob Wright said the extra security steps were taken because UT-Arlington police received reports from other agencies of threats against Gutierrez.

With a police officer stationed at each end of the stage, Gutierrez and Taylor traded barbs, found no common ground and sometimes elicited applause from supporters in the crowd.

Taylor said Mexican immigration is bad for the United States and cited statistics detailing high crime and school dropout rates among Hispanics. Gutierrez said those statistics are an ugly reality because whites have been in charge and have discriminated so harshly against Hispanics.

Taylor said even though Hispanics are in charge of everything south of America’s borders, residents are fleeing those failed societies. He said he hopes a wall is built along the border to keep illegal Hispanic immigrants out.

Gutierrez said walls separating people have always failed. He argued that Mexicans have a right to move throughout the Americas because they were here before white settlers and because much of their land was “stolen” from them in the Mexican-American war.

Taylor pointed to that sentiment as deep disloyalty to the United States.

“Mexicans in particular are the worst candidates for U.S. citizenship,” he said. “They don’t respect our sovereignty.”

Taylor read a quote allegedly attributed to Gutierrez that says “the gringo” should be killed. Gutierrez has denied making that statement, but it has been repeated on conservative talk shows in recent weeks.

Gutierrez invited the audience to come to the stage to get a copy of a two-page text that quoted him saying decades ago that a youth movement he was leading would work toward eliminating Anglos’ “economic, political and social” base of support.

Gutierrez that says “the gringo” should be killed.

That's true, yet we still find ourselves doing just that almost every day here on FR.

Professor Jose Angel Gutierrez, founder of UT-Arlington’s Center for Mexican-American Studies . . .

So, that's what Jose is up to these days.

Ever wonder where La Raza Unida came from?  Well, Jose was one of the principle organizers back in 1970 in Crystal City, Texas.

Jose and the boys and girls didn't do much for Crystal City or Zavala County.

This from Middle Rio Grande Development Council (an organization composed of nine county govenments) is interesting:

Four of the nine counties that comprise the Middle Rio Grande Region - Dimmit, Zavala, Maverick, and La Salle - are among the twenty poorest counties in the United States according to a report by the Bureau of Economic Analysis of the U.S. Department of Commerce. The Middle Rio Grande Region is approximately 76% Hispanic, according to the 1990 Census. Projections from the U.S. Census Bureau estimates that by the year 2005 the Hispanic population will grow to 80%. The population in the Middle Rio Grande Region living below poverty is 40.75%, with an average per capita income of $7,078, compared to the State average of 18.09% and $12,904, respectively. The current rate of unemployment for the region (according to figures for May 2000 from the Texas Workforce Board) is approximately 11.6%, compared to the State at 4.2% and the United States at 3.9%.

Mexican migration into the Middle Rio Grande Region, especially after 1994 with the devaluation of the peso, has historically been a low skilled population and has contributed to the high levels of poverty and unemployment and caused increases in public service demands in an area that already suffers from a stagnant economy and limited tax base. Combined with relatively small and low density populations, these factors have lead to greater dependence on public assistance has caused a greater drain not just on local government but on state and federal resources, . . .

"Gutierrez said walls separating people have always failed. He argued that Mexicans have a right to move throughout the Americas because they were here before white settlers and because much of their land was “stolen” from them in the Mexican-American war."

Well, then i guess I have the right to go over to Ireland and ignore their laws, work under the table, pay no taxes, and recieve free education, healthcare, and vote, because Cromwell "stole" land from my ancestors.

I wish someone could read that statement to President Bush, and have him rationalize his stance in the face of it. He understands the war on terror, but he just does'nt get that this.

This is gonna get ugly.

If they "eliminate Angelo's 'economic, political, and social' base of support", won't that make this country just like Mexico? the very thing they are, allegedly, fleeing?

I've heard this "Professor" on Hannity and Combes, and so much of what he says "reeks"---AND is factually flawed! Hispanics did NOT inhabit most of the area they claim is theirs. There were a few that had gotten as far as our southern borders, most got there as Indians accompanying Spanish Conquistadors. As to his claim that it was lost during the Mexican-American War, he is right-----they LOST. Anyway, there is a prior claim that takes precedence over his, the Native Americans.

If I had any doubts whether this fool did, in fact, say "death to Gringos", they were dispelled when I heard him speak. He is an enemy of this country, and should be deported as an "enemy of the state".

If you saw that video that went around during the first protest that they had, you heard his voice in the background. He talked about how whites are not having babies and are dying. He also spoke of how whites are going to need affirmative action in the future because Hispanics will run everything.

I wrote the President of UT-Arlington in a very cordial manner (not too scathing, only logical) and never heard a thing back.

Can you imagine what would happen if a white said these things about blacks?

Throw the whole lot of them out. We can do better than this. Let those who are willing to go through the process to take a spot in line and get with the process. The rest are criminals.

I used to sympathize with these people to some degree. That's long gone.

I have friends who, until a month ago, were absolutely ambivalent about illegal aliens. After the demonstrations, the ugly rhetoric, and the "demands" these criminals have made, they are rabidly anti-illegal. These idiots have cooked their own goose---and I'm certain Senators are hearing about it!

I wish I had seen this.  He can't be talking about Hispanics.  Have any notion of how many Hispanics are white?

Where Latinos become a majority, you'll see something like what we have in San Antonio  Lots of Spanish surnames and business as usual.

With a Latino/Tejano population above 55 percent, we recently elected an Anglo mayor and a mixed bag of council people.  We hired an Anglo female city manager and an Anglo Police Chief.

I can hardly wait to see what happens here on Monday.  I'm wondering whether or not the turnout for the afternoon march will amount to much of anything.  I'll be greatly surprised if it does.  We only had about 18,000, maybe, make the last march a few weeks ago.

" Gutierrez that says “the gringo” should be killed. Gutierrez has denied making that statement,"

........and why hasn't FBI, CAI arrested or at least investigated this man for "Terrorist Threat"? Terrorist Threat to kill gringoes (is that US citizens?) Such a threat is jail without a hearing. My daughter was held in LA jail for one year without a hearing for "terrorist threat" at first $250,000 bail, then No Bail. Don't know how long they would have held her if I had not intervened.

She was not guilty of such a threat, but was taped illegally and her statement was twisted. It was a very rich persons citizen's arrest. Proof that Bush should not be allowed to indiscriminately tape US citizens unless it is War has been legally declared. I am not aware that we are at war legally, just generally against Terrorists and no body seems to know where they are.

This person in my view is guilty of a Terrorist Threat and should be arrested and held without bail until tried in a court of law. So what's keeping them??

"Taylor said Mexican immigration is bad for the United States and cited statistics detailing high crime and school dropout rates among Hispanics. Gutierrez said those statistics are an ugly reality because whites have been in charge and have discriminated so harshly against Hispanics."

But Gutierrez does admit the statistics are accurate. But he forgets that not
all Americans are white.

Gutierrez argued that Mexicans have a right to move throughout the Americas because they were here before white settlers and because much of their land was “stolen” from them in the Mexican-American war.

Illegals aliens/immigrants have NO rights and we didn't "steal" the land. We paid the Mexican government $15,000,000 for the land and that was in 1848!

RACISM at it's worse!!

This professor who advocates the killing of whites should be arrested and deported.

But yet May 1 these terroists will be allowed to march as militants and takeover our land. No one denouncing them and their threats to shutdown this country!

All we hold dear like our National Anthem is being disrespected by the militant socialists.

"Hispanics will run everything"

...and what about the chinese, africans, mixed races, indians, they're just going to sit like LUMPS??(US indians were here before mexican indians so discounts the statement that mexican indians owned the land). The statements are random, hit and miss aimed at "goading" US citizens. Obviously trying to start a fight. Mexicans think they will get by unscathed. Bet NOT! Militia will be there when time comes. Remember Kent State?? It appears well organized with sanctions of Pres.

There is no doubt in my mind that Bush and his buddies have it under control and are just letting the situation take shape with all inputs, including US citizens'. Seems that the best organized will shape the new legislation. That is the best we can hope for in the next few days. Eventually, US citizens may have to organize vigilante style, and make some citizen arrests. Law breakers can be put behind bobbed wire until we decide what to do with them like in other wars.

Affirmative Action, what does that have to do with anything. Obviously this person is deranged and needs pshchiatric help. Someone needs to contact President of Institution "en masse", call ICE and FBI. (daughter told me FBI is best if I need action). Maybe just freedom of speech issue as long as they do not suggest "inciting a riot" . Burning the US Flag seems to be meant to incite a riot, doing physical harm, using bombs, guns etc. Then they will be arrested. Let's hope that US citizens keep their cool and are not the ones to get arrested. Certainly would not want this person teaching my children.

Let's hope that they are just pushing us to see how far we will go. We should be confident that we can handle this when the time comes. We know that US citizens are majority, over 300 million US citizens maximum 1-40 million of them??. All this noise will be well documented, names and faces will be put on a list not only by US Government but other groups in this country who will not stand for much more of this without doing something. Texas will be first, my bet, to step up to the plate!

Group of blacks posted on FR yesterday. May post a bit of it here. But they are mad as hell also in L.A. because of being bullied by Mexicans in L.A. taking jobs, beating up children pushing them around on the buses, streets and schools. I may be wrong, first incindiary situation maybe in L.A. Hope we have enough police but doubt it. Last riot people got hurt, building were burned. Hope it doesn't come to this. Keep cool, have a plan. Maybe it is time for democrats to lead for a while, with businesses breaking the laws, stealing money, taxes, (DeLay, Abramhoff, Libby scandals) what choice do we have?

Professor Jose Angel Gutierrez, founder of UT-Arlington’s Center for Mexican-American Studies is a board-certified Class 1 Division 1 NUTCASE. Take a gander at his "private little world..."

http://home.earthlink.net/~mcgauley/Video/aztlan_caps.wmv

Personally I would not give .02 cents for his chances at success but taking into account the bizarre nature of the way our current administration is pushing this amnesty in the face of overwhelming and OBVIOUS majority wanting the illegal aliens out of this country, we just might have this shoved down our throats. If so, there will be a "reaction" from the legitimate Americans demonstrating the principle of "from the consent of the governed."
