Dean says Bush "cut and run" on Katrina

By John Whitesides, Political Correspondent 13 minutes ago

Democratic Party chief Howard Dean said on Saturday the Bush administration had "cut and run" on Gulf Coast hurricane recovery and created a political legacy of deficits, divisiveness and deceit.

Dean, speaking at the Democratic National Committee's spring meeting, said November's congressional elections would be a choice between real change from Democrats or more of the same from Republicans.

"There has been enough of fear, incompetence and corruption," Dean told DNC members. He said voters would judge President George W. Bush's administration and the Republicans on their slow response to Hurricane Katrina and failure to develop a suitable recovery plan.

"Republicans have cut and run when it comes to rebuilding the Gulf Coast, and we will not do that," he said.

The Democrats chose New Orleans for their spring meeting in part to highlight the administration's heavily criticized handling of Katrina, which killed more than 1,300 people, displaced hundreds of thousands of people and shattered New Orleans and the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Dean said Democrats offered values based on community and opportunity and a more inclusive vision for the future.

"I think Americans are tired of being lectured to by Republicans who have brought a culture of corruption, cronyism and incompetence to Washington," he said. "They offer a legacy of more of the same -- deficits, divisiveness and deceit."

Control of Congress is at stake in November's elections, when Democrats need to gain six seats in the Senate and 15 seats in the House of Representatives to claim majorities.

Right, and everyone thinks we shouldn't "stoop to their level" and fire back.

I agree that Howard Dean doesn't deserve a high level response, but President Bush never should have accepted the tone that he has anything to apologize for on Katrina.

I see Yahoo has cranked up the alliteration machine for their friend Howard.

Good old Reuters, right there to help Democrats establish another talking point: Cut and run on Katrina. Watch for this to be repeated ad nauseum, tossed into a long series of mindless simplified talking point "charges" to be rattled off on air.

Dean says Bush "cut and run" on Katrina

Typically democrat strategy...attempt to defuse the weight of their actions by co-opting the terms that condemn their actions...in this case their cut and run Iraqi strategy.

BTW Dean, remind us how much money the Federal Administration has and plans to dump into the Katrina situation?

I am *so* tired of the DNC: All they have to offer are speeches filled with rote recapitulation of prefabricated talking-points.

No, he didn't "cut and run". However, as a taxpayer in Tennessee, I would support keeping federal dollars out of local issues, and living in a city below sea level, along the Gulf coast where hurricanes are plentiful is a local issue.

"Cut and run" would describe the Democrat Governor and Democrat Mayor who escaped to high ground in Baton Rouge, ignored their own evacuation plan, left the buses parked, refused Amtrak's offer to help in evacuation and left tens of thousands of low income black people stranded in a flood surge zone.

The Bush Administration does have a fatal flaw and that is its unwillingness to confront the Democrats Big Lies head on.

Bush never should have accepted the tone that he has anything to apologize for on Katrina.

I watched the Katrina hearings where FEMA Mike is grilled for two days. The only thing I can fault him for is what he admitted was a mistake...not recognizing that the government in Louisiana was/is dysfunctional. His comments about FEMA not being in the ice business was the best part of the hearings too.
