Imminent Ulster car bomb attack foiled by police (Filed: 19/04/2006)

Police in Northern Ireland have seized 250lb of home-made explosives, foiling a potentially devastating car bomb attack.

Local youths threw petrol bombs at police after the raid A senior policeman said those behind the plot - likely to be dissident republicans - planned to explode the device "as soon as possible".

Four men were arrested during the raid on a breaker's yard in Lurgan, Co Armagh. A car was also taken away for forensic examination.

Superintendent Alan Todd, Lurgan's police commander, said the police had no knowledge of a specific target for the bomb, but said the explosives posed a huge threat in a residential area.

He said: "Material of this sort is by its very nature unstable and, therefore, people preparing these things do so with the intent to use it as soon as possible

"That means a device was being constructed for immediate use, but, more importantly, it means that unstable explosive substances, ready for use, were being prepared in what is a busy residential area behind a commercial premises."

The Continuity IRA, a splinter terrorist grouping opposed to the Northern Ireland peace process, are the main suspects.

The four men arrested, aged 22, 26, 36 and 46, were held under the Terrorism Act. They can be questioned for up to seven days before being charged.

Police later came under petrol bomb attack as tensions heightened in the area around the anti-terrorist operation.

Crowds of youths attacked police at the scene, throwing petrol bombs, bottles, stones and paint bombs.

I love this. The police just saved possibly your life or that of someone you know. How do you thank them? With a petrol bomb! Brilliant!

Apparently, the Continuity IRA doesn't agree with the stand-down order given a couple of months ago, do they?

From what I've read, this doesn't surprise me that it took place in Armagh County. I've always heard that it's been a safe haven for IRA types.

A definite no-go area for the British Army for years. Especially towns like Crossmaglen. Right on the border, for easy escape.

I still remember a t-shirt I saw in a Sinn Fein office once - South Armagh IRA: The People's Army

It's basically an enclave.

Apparently not.

The Continuity IRA and the Real IRA splinter groups were also responsible for the Omagh bombing.

Doesn't McCain cause enough trouble in this country?

Seriously - it's wonderful news that they got to the bomb before it went off.

LOL!

I think it's such an euphemism 'dissident republican' - 'splinter group' is more accurate!

Seriously - it's wonderful news that they got to the bomb before it went off.

yes, it's a fairly big bomb - could have caused a lot of carnage.

Brits out now. Let the national recovery begin. Propped up government supported by invading army.
Check out this article: 75 percent of British want out of Ireland; 70 percent of Ulster Prots OK with unification.
http://www.csmonitor.com/2002/0304/p09s01-woeu.htm

Awfully tough to criticize the victims of an invasion that is now 350 years old. The irony is that the British themselves got rid of the man, Cromwell, responsible for the invasion of Ireland but they didn't give my ancestors the same relief.

Depressing. It's the old "one man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter" schtick.

The 'dissident' Republican groups have no political legitimacy, and I hope they aren't able to tap into the same NORAID funding the provos could, else it will never end.

There will always be nuts with bombs, always some fringe that can't be brought into any political framework.

I said what I said. I support the British ending their 350-year invasion of Ireland and discontinuing their military support of the No. Ireland government. I support the reunification of Ireland.
I didn't say St. Anne's Cathedreal should be bombed so that tons of stone rain down upon the casket of Sir Edward Carson, a Protestant leader who urged the unprovoked attack by Protestant shipyard employees against their surprised Catholic co-workers.
I didn't say gee it's too bad they didn't kill Thatcher in Brighton and I didn't say I was glad they blew up Harrod's in an effort to bring the war home to England.
I could have but I didn't.
Nearly 400 Protestant attacks on Catholics Jan.-Oct. 2005. Google it.

Yeah, I had a previous encounter with that poster before, I am getting fed up with having to justify my opposition to the IRA, and I'm also fed up with having to assert the fact that I'm a Catholic and a citizen of the Republic of Ireland.

I think the CIRA do get funding from criminal gangs in south Boston.

There will always be nuts with bombs, always some fringe that can't be brought into any political framework.

Especially when there are fools who will support them!
