I don't mean to sound mean-spirited/xenophobic/nativist/racist or anything, but shouldn't immigrants themselves bear the cost of learning English? This amendment clearly puts another burden on American citizens.

It all comes down to one's philosophy of what immigration policy should be. I think it should be like all other public policies; i.e. set with the goal of benefitting existing Americans (I know that's naive and idealistic, but it should be the goal).

I'll gladly help pay for the english classes in exchange for a sealed border and a aggressive deportation policy.

Sen. Alexander: Vouchers to Learn English

I'll pay for the vouchers, but only if they use 'em in Mexico.

In Arizona this funding for teaching English in the schools is supposed to cost $4600. Nuts.

Of course. Lamar is probably being bribed lobbied with campaign contributions by entities geared up to offer these "classes." Fake completion certificates will be a cost borne by the consumer, though.

More business welfare.

--this is an especially idiotic idea. Who will do the teaching? who will certify that the students will have learned enough?

Chances are the "teaching" will end up farmed out to some advocacy group which will of course report one hundred percent success while absorbing a good chunk of taxpayer change--

Nothing, nada, zero, zilch unless and until the borders are sealed and then, maybe, we'll talk. I've let Alexander's office know that he'll never get another vote from this Tennessean.

Seems like something church groups could do.

Get Cardinal Mahoney behind it

What about??? every new immigrant to the US must complete 2 years of military service, as we need workers in domestics, supply, peeling potatoes...etc? BEFORE he is granted a temporary worker's pass as a prerequisite to gaining citizenship.

"Reasons that officials give for permanent residents not seeking citizenship include not speaking English well enough, an inability to pay the fee and not wanting to forfeit citizenship in their native country."

I like that last reason.

I have taught English as a volunteer at local church that offers free English classes to immigrants, among other things.

As far as I know, the only money the immigrants will need is to cover babysitting services, books, CDs. Most beginning English classes are free.

Unfortunately, the House bill will turn me into felon for "aiding" illegal aliens, since I don't check the ID papers of my students

We shouldn't have to pay for anything for these people! Why is it our responsibility? We should have rules.....period. If the immigrant, legal or illegal, doesn't wanta follow them on their own dime then citizenship doesn't mean much to them and they can go back where they came from....imo. Afterall, we are not begging for immigrants, heck everyone in the world wants to come here. Why can't we be picky about them, it is a priveledge, not a right.

Typical politician. A CD-ROM language course would cost a lot less than $500. They could supply their own dang 'puters. And they could do it in their home country after Lamar and his pandering butt-buddies get real and give us a bill that secures the borders and sends the illegal aliens packing. Get tough on the employers and the illegals will self-deport. No roundup necessary.
