NY Times ^ | March 11, 2006 | John Tierney

If gay marriage becomes legal, its opponents have been warning, the next step in America's moral deterioration will be legalized polygamy. These conservatives won't be happy with "Big Love," the HBO series starting tomorrow night.

A. Against the law of God, but you're probably atheist, so that won't matter, and save the Father Abraham schpeel. It's been done here a hundred times.

B. There's a reason that laws exist. It's kinda like pebbles in a pond. Tossing a pebble might mean nothing, but then there are those pesky ripples. To promote a "hump at will" society in front of our children, to allow it, undermines the family unit. And I have never, ever, ever seen a SUCCESSFUL polyamorous couple. There may be some. BUT The % of failure is way way high. Higher than marriage between consenting male/female. High like gay marriage. This affects the kids as well when the marriages of their parents falls apart. There is no permanence or security in their family home.

3.Further, there WILL be a favorite. Three's a crowd. This makes it demeaning to women.

How about we return to RESPECTING the institution... It's not about I get his house when he dies. It's about loving another person enough to want to be with no one else, perhaps have children together, raise them well and grow old together. One on one. Not one on fifteen.

Sometimes I think this is solely about men's egos. Newsflash.... ain't none of you so good or such an inspired/eager/ever-ready lover that we NEED to share you in order to accommodate you. Have I been with every one? No. Have I been with a good healthy representative sample? You bet. Use to dance at girly bars, had 36 Cs at age 12. And I ain't never met a man worth sharing with no other woman.

How's that?

My principles are consistant. I would never subject my flesh to such things as you mention. On top of that, such behaviors are extremely rare and highly indicative of psychosis. Using them as a debate point for testing my premises borders on the absurd.

And yes, I am arguing against you having legislation enacted that infringes on my rights of action and free will. How would you feel if somehow legislation was enacted tomorrow that made cannibalism mandatory as the only means of disposing of a loved ones remains?

Mandatory laws should not be compared to prohibitory laws in regards to marriage. No one says it's mandatory to marry. At this point in time you can legally screw around with as many women as will tolerate you...it's legal, go knock yourself out.

Besides we're talking about thousands of years of history prohibiting polygamy in our "Western Societies."

So are you saying we should prohibit someone's free will and right to action to perform necrophilia, based upon your assumption that they are insane? And even so, what business is it of yours, and who are you to pass judgement?

Now you are getting to the heart of the matter. To change the definition of marriage won't cause overnight the destruction of society any more than the "War on Poverty" caused the immediate destruction of what had been, a stable black family structure. But the effects of the welfare system soon enough made themselves felt. It is in society's best interest to strengthen this institution and not administer the final coup de grace. Some of these polygamy advocates here sound just like these idiot civil rights attorneys who have been bloviating about how unfair traditional marriage is. Why the h*ll don't they move to Saudi if they don't like the way it is and quit trying to screw up my country.

Since you advocate the "might makes right" social theory I think you lost any right to continue this.

It is vile and wicked and disgusting, which is why such practices are almost universally outlawed even among savage barbarians. Apparently Libertarians are more loathsome than even I had thought.

I thought I was one, until I began looking into this issue.

Is Polygamy detrimental to society? YES

Does our society protect your rights? (even the rights of Eagle Eye, Dead Corpse and TheSuaveOne) YES

Is society worth saving - YES, YES, YES

I believe they meant fumarase deficiency which is prevalent in the polygamist community on the Utah-Arizona border due to inbreeding.

Been in the news several times.

You are totally correct, the higher birth defect rate in muslim nations is directly related to the high level of consanguinous marriages and polygamy and well documented.

First, you invoked hitler and nazism, thus invoking Godwin's Law.

Second, you make claims on my behalf that are inaccurate and absurd.

Maybe if you switch chairs fast enough you can continue to argue against your self using the positions you invented for me.

Quick! Switch! Go!

First, why would you suppose any such thing?

Second, if a culture could accept that, and some have, then who are you to prohibit them from doing it?

Polygamy and polygyny are not the same.

Is that the best you got?

Well if polygamy were ever legal in this country, polygyny would be too.

I think most men would find that revolting, just like most women find polygamy revolting.

And they are the same.

I'll guess that your a man, and a Mormon. Most Mormons think polygamy is not all bad.

They are the same thing and if you think one will ever be legal and not the other, well your just wrong.

Let me guess, you've burned a bra or two in your life?

1. Sorry, not an atheist, but nice guess.

2. You nor anyone else has proof that if this were legalized it would be worse for the children. So please try this one on someone else, I ain't buying.

3. Sounds like you are affraid you would be the one that was not the favorite, again, no proof only speculation.

As far as the sharing comment, nobody is saying that you have to be part of a plural marriage but for those who do have interest, you have no buisness dictating your choice on them...la
