March 30, 2006--Fifty-five percent (55%) of Americans say they are better off today than they were four years ago. A Rasmussen Reports national opinion poll of 5,000 adults found that 36% disagree and say they are not better off.
The sense of progress is found across most demographic groups. Fifty-six percent (56%) of men and 54% of women say they are better off today. That view is shared by 55% of white Americans, 52% of black Americans, and 58% of all other Americans.
There are some difference--retired Americans are less likely than working age Americans to say they are better off.
And, as you would expect, there are partisan differences. However, the partisan differences are less significant than found on many issues. Seventy-two percent (72%) of Republicans say they are better off than four years ago. That same answer is given by 40% of Democrats and 51% of those not affiliated with either major party.
This sense of progress comes at a time when only one-third of Americans rate the U.S. economy as good or excellent.

But do people feel like they are better off? People tend to vote on their perceptions and how they feel about things.

This means two-thirds of Americans are too stupid to pull their heads out of their a**es and are reading the hysterical ravings of the dinosaur media.
I find the point about currently retired americans hard to swallow. younger people, when they retire, will not have the pensions and the returns on social security that current seniors enjoy - and yet they are griping. free drugs from medicare too, and still they are not satisfied.
If the Rats take over the Congress and allow taxes to go back up (not making the tax cuts permanent), will people feel better?
no. that economic uncertainty is caused by factors like offshoring of jobs, and companies eliminating pensions and retiree medical. that's real, its not some invention of the media.
No matter how good the news, you can be counted on to be the one on your hands and knees, looking for the roach droppings.
If people say they are better off, wouldn't you think they would feel they are better off?

how poor can they be, the atlantic city casinos are wall to wall with them. they all smoke like crazy, at $5+ a pack - while gambling.

You will hear, in detail, every ailment and sob story described, from chronic constipation to post-menopausal drip.
And, despite Medicare, nobody has a dime to pay for any of it.

The greedy geezers are more likely to be malcontent Democrats and of course their world view runs from seeing the glass as half empty at best to seeing no glass for most and a few who don't even see the table.
