Coast-to-coast 'movement' rages on
THE WASHINGTON TIMES ^ | March 28, 2006 | Guy Taylor

The Roman Catholic Church, dozens of grass-roots coalitions and Spanish-language radio disc jockeys have helped fuel protests nationwide against congressional efforts to tackle illegal immigration....

The Catholic Church has played a key role in opposing legislation to restrict immigration and rallying protesters....

"As we've been able to reach more and more people, they're waking up to the ills of the proposals made to date and seeing the need to be vocal about the kinds of reforms that would be more acceptable," said Mark D. Franken, executive director of migration and refugee services for the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops....

The bishops conference in May began "Justice for Immigrants," a campaign focused on activating a network of grass-roots movements against punitive immigration-reform legislation....

Mr. Franken said all the nation's 197 Catholic dioceses are in some way backing the campaign, with more than 70 being particularly active. Disseminating pamphlets and networking, community-level groups tied to the campaign are operating "in churches and everywhere they can gain access," he said.

Protests in Houston were high school kids from 6 different districts. And politicians.

I understand, but I am willing to criticize my own. My church is still allowing men to stay in their position who covered up the molestations. Now, Cardinal Mahoney is actively undermining the sovereignty of our county. I don't like it one bit.

"The Church (and true conservative Catholics) has been battling the Marxist "Liberation Theology" scourge in Central and other parts of Latin America for a long time. It is contrary to Church teachings. The US bishops do not speak "for the Church" as a whole."

That's exactly right! I'm one Roman Catholic for whom these Bishops do NOT speak.

Many of the Bishops are just out of touch!

First, the Bible says there is ONE mediator between God and man, the man Christ Jesus -- not the Pope, not Mary, not a priest.

Yes, and...

Would you please state an official teaching of the Church that claims otherwise?

Second, the doctrine that Mary had no other offspring is simply not true. The Greek language has specific words for brother, sister, cousin, etc. as do all languages. It clearly states he had brothers AND sisters (plural). Any other teaching is false doctrine. If in these two major tenets of catholicism they are in error, then they are in error about a LOT of things. No time to detail all of it.

The word "brothers" and "sisters" in the verse you cite is the Greek word "adelphos," meaning:
1) a brother, whether born of the same two parents or only of the same father or mother
2) having the same national ancestor, belonging to the same people, or countryman
3) any fellow or man
4) a fellow believer, united to another by the bond of affection
5) an associate in employment or office
6) brethren in Christ
a) his brothers by blood
b) all men
c) apostles
d) Christians, as those who are exalted to the same heavenly place

Sorry, but I don't see where that is a proof-text of your position. The word is defined, as I'm sure you can see, pretty loosely.

Also, the Church hasn't taken a position on whether those mentioned in that verse are cousins or half-brothers, but that word adelphos could be applicable for either.

Oh, by the way, the Greek word for cousin (cf Luk 1:38) is "suggenes" -- meaning kinsmen.

Was visiting Italy in the late 60s. There we were in a desperately poor little town. The guide told us that the Church responded to the poverty by building a new church in town. We visited the church. Gold leaf and all. Jeweled icons, etc.

Now, Cardinal Mahoney is actively undermining the sovereignty of our county.

No, Mahoney is not doing that, Doug.

He is objecting to government interference in the ministry of priests, deacons, and laymen. He thinks it is wrong (as do I) for the House to pass legislation which requires these ministers to determine whether a Hispanic who comes to them is in the country legally before they minister to them. The penalty for ministering to an illegal is jail!

That's just nutty, and the Senate judiciary committee knocked that provision down as its first order of business.

The House wants priests to be cops. Bizarre.

Sorry, I need to be more specific. The L.A. archdiocese was responsible for busing protestors into the rally.

Careful there, don't you know that YOU are not the Pope. Only He gets to say what is and isn't truly Catholic.

Durant was a socialist who left the Church and who thought Islam was a great religion.

Not to mention his "history" has a big gap where the Scholastics were. Seems he had "too much" of that in school, so left it out.

And is much admired and quoted by the history prof Newt Gingrich.

The same one who likes to talk about populating other planets, thinks FDR was a great president, lost a staredown with Clintoon and apparently lost his seat as Speaker of the House.

Yeah,I understand the anger. The Bishops (individually, each on in his own diocese) have the job of teaching Catholic doctrine, including doctrines that have political ramifications. There is, however, no doctrine against law enforcement to regulate movement across a national border.

The USCCB (which lacks canonical authority) has no business endorsing one legislative alternative and opposing another, UNLESS the legislation is in direct violation of moral teachings. For instance, if the proposed law said you cannot practice the Works of Mercy if the hungry or sick person is an illegal immigrant, that's something the Bishops would have to speak out against, since it would say in effect that we can't practice our faith.

The Church teaches that it is the laity (not the clergy) whose job it is to find the best political approach for a just society.

The R.C. church claims to be aginst abortion but this is just window dressing. Ted Kennedys stance on abortion comes directly from Rome. He is attacking the US on two fronts one is cause genocide of the legal children of this country through abortion. The other front is to flood this country with Illegals from all of South America which are mostly Catholic. Yes The church wants to dominate this country. The concerns people had regarding our frist Catholic president are now being realized.

The Catholic Church is taking over the country?

"Careful there, don't you know that YOU are not the Pope. Only He gets to say what is and isn't truly Catholic."

Oho! You mean I'm not the Holy Mother of the Church??!

OK, fair enough. But remember that the Catholic Catechism was called for by an ecumenical council, OK'd and authorized by Pope John Paul II, and actually written under the editorial direction of then-Cardinal Ratzinger. It's about as solid doctrinally as you can get.

Your wisdom is sublime in the post to which I reply. It may well be lost on the usual gang of anti-Catholics.
