Polls: Illegals a Serious Problem in U.S.

Most people in the United States think illegal immigration is a serious problem. A solid majority oppose making it easier for illegal immigrants to become legal workers or citizens.

Some findings in recent polling:

Some 59 percent say they oppose allowing illegal immigrants to apply for legal, temporary-worker status, an NBC News-Wall Street Journal poll found.

More than six in 10, 62 percent, say they oppose making it easier for illegal immigrants to become citizens, according to a Quinnipiac University poll. Nine in 10 in that poll say they consider immigration to be a serious problem - with 57 percent of those polled saying very serious.

Three-fourths say the United States is not doing enough along its borders to keep illegal immigrants out, a Time Magazine poll found.

The NBC-WSJ poll was taken in March, Quinnipiac in February and Time in January. The NBC-WSJ and Time polls surveyed about 1,000 adults and had a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 3 percentage points. The Quinnipiac poll of 1,892 registered voters had a margin of error of plus or minus 2.5 percentage points

Wow, maybe Bush should listen to this. It may save a few Republican seats this fall! I, for one, will vote for the constitutional candidate if amnesty passes in the guise of a "guest worker" program. Bush be warned, the people of this country want to retain their soverienty!

We need 2 fences. The first one about 100 yards inside the border. Make it 25 fett tall with all the razor wire, glass, etc. with armed guards, dogs, cameras, etc. placed in strategic places. Then a second fence about 3 foot tall right on the border. There would be no guards on this fence. We then put all our prisoners in between the two fences.

Mexico would have to guard the 3 ft fence or let our prisoners into their country. Do you think they may decide to build a fence too? I'm sure there would be a need to keep their poor helpless people away from this 3 ft fence too as they would be fodder for the bad guys.

Seventy-one percent of Americans asked say they are more likely to vote for a candidate who favors tighter controls on illegal immigration, compared with 11 percent who would be less likely, according to an NBC News/Wall Street Journal Poll conducted in mid-March.

It's MORE than 59%. This is a winner for ANY candidate in 2006... 2008... IF they have the cajones to actively support it! It crosses over well from red to blue states and would eviscerate the Dem's come election time should a Republican embrace it.

I'd like to propose a third fence to your proposal - this fence would encompass the Beltway around D.C.

This fence needs to be electrified with razor wire on top.

This fence would NOT include any airport or have any opening. Once in, elected officials (families, staffs and lobbyists as well) would NEVER be permitted out!!!

Freedumb2003's Guest Worker Program

1. Only offer jobs when a potential worker is matched to a true opening at prevailing wages (we could borrow from the Cal State system to determine "prevailing wages") to ensure we don't push down the local economy.
2. Require that the guest worker apply from and in his/her native country
3. Require and that there be regular "breaks" where they have to return to their country for 3 or 4 contiguous weeks per year.
4. No family allowed, except for brief visits here. They worker can visit their native country all they want, within the normal limits of employment agreements.
5. After a certain number of years of following the rules, they could apply for temporary permanent residency and them follow the standard path to permanent residency and citizenship now in place.
6. The employer would be required to offer health insurance, at the most reasonable rates possible, and it would be mandatory for the guest worker to enroll and pay for it.
7. No particular country would be "preferred" and participant slots would be reflective of the respective native country's overall population, with caps established by a commission.
8. I think all this makes too much sense to ever be done
