Immigration Reform Markup
Sen. Arlen Spector (R-PA) chairs a full Judiciary Committee meeting to mark up pending legislation including a draft bill on comprehensive immigration overhaul. Also, the committee will vote on a bill to televise Supreme Court proceedings and judicial nominations to federal courts.

"I think the GOP are concerned there could be major RIOTS if they do something drastic at this time, with these type of protests that have been going down.'
Really, that would not be good for the open borders people. They need to hire some PR firm to tell them to put down the Mexican Flag.
Graham is going to come down in favor of guest worker program, seeing as how many of these immigrants now call the US "home." They have no place to go. Graham advocates McCain/Kennedy solution. The immigrants, in this solution, are here to stay regardless of the fact that they may have entered illegally.
LOL. I think this issue is one of those things with a predetermined outcome.
"An illegal would have to be an idiot to join the guest worker program - he'd be taxed, subject to worker comp, ohsha, everything else. Therefore Guest Worker is dead on arrival."
Exactly. If you think a new guest worker program gets enforced I have a swamp to sell you.
Without a fence, the entire system of enforcement is designed to fail. At best it's a waste of money.
Seeing those kids and adults alike carry the Mexican flag in our streets, makes me a little angry.
I am not saying for or against, but is it doable?
"I think the GOP are concerned there could be major RIOTS if they do something drastic at this time, with these type of protests that have been going down."
I think President Bush came into office knowing there are some would love to bring it to that point, and our media is in the hunt for a "civil war".
If we can spend more than $1 trillion on the Iraq War, we can definitely afford a fence that will cost a few billion.
As the bill stands now, it at least builds some key parts of the fence.
I know THAT is right...none of the Cornyn/Kyl or Sessions amendments have any backing it seems to me.
BTW..I AGREE that the haste of THIS hearing is wrong..and so Sessions is correct.
However, they KNEW this was coming since before the first of the year...why haven't they done the work, instead of traveling all over the world telling foreign countries how awful our War in Iraq is..
Now we have these senators pretending that all of these illegal aliens are hard working, church going, wonderful family folks. I'll bet that's just not the case. Where do the ones who shoot cops come from. What about those who smash into cars while drunk and without any insurance. Wat about the 30% of prison inmates who are illegals. Just good, hard working folks??????
Senator Feinstein injects a question that indicates she does not like the idea of imposing a requirement for uninterrupted work (which I think is no period of more than 45 days without holding a job), because that would exclude, well, it would exclude some.
Senator Graham indiates the nature of the aliens as "The last thing they want to avoid is work."
Interesting cost link from 2002.

I am not necessarily anti-fence. I just want it fixed.
Quite an assumption to make with respect to 100% of these illegals. No drug dealers in the bunch?
As framed; 200,000 cap on H1B visas (including exemptions) + $2,000 fee (an increase from present), the amendment is CERTAIN to fail.
Grassley complains to Specter that he (Grassley) has been trying to negotiate this with Specter for weeks, and Specter was not responsive to the offer. Hahahahaha. Collegiality at its finest.
Kyl points out that the "go to the back of the line" selling point is bogus. "It's not fair to those who are playing by the rules."
Kyl is also peeved about the hurry up to vote stance. At this time of the day, this hearing could become interesting. ;-)
Break the law for 2,3,4,5 years: you're out of luck. Break the law for 6 years running and then you're OK!
Inmates/Asylum.
Kyl DID make the good point that Kennedy is wrong that a majority of these people want to become CITIZENS...
If anyone has paid any attention to the protests, they most certainly do NOT want to become AMERICAN citizens, they want to be Mexicans living in America legally, will ALL benefits, but NO ASSIMILATION...
Graham is an idiot...IMHO>
