There were a few who were a bit whacky, the worst probably was Elagabulus.
I think the topic article mentions Alma-Tadema, a favorite Victorian-era painter. There's a semi-famous anecdote (which I'll attempt from memory) about one of his works, a very large piece, "The Finding of Moses" -- sixty or more years after it was painted, it was literally on the curbside, about to be thrown out as trash, and was carried off by a pedestrian, who made a few bucks selling it to an antiques dealer. Eventually it wound up (after some restoration work) being sold at auction for some huge sum, and interest in Alma-Tadema started to revive. A-T's most famous collector was Allen Funt (of Candid Camera fame). A-T painted at least a couple of works with Caracalla in the title -- one about Caracalla's baths in Rome, and this one:
Caracalla and Geta
Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema
