"But send money anyway. :)"

That's the bottom line.

The HSUS claims to be an "animal protection" organization, trying to downplay their links to animal rights groups. But, the leaders of the HSUS are/have been/still are the same ones involved in the more radical AR groups like PETA.

They raise about $40 million annually, and don't house, spay, feed, or neuter animals. They leave this up to the local volunteers in the shelters struggling for funds to continue operation. While they rake in millions, millions of animals are being euthanized, when all that money could go to free neuter/spay programs.

Heck, they even charge the local shelters for "educational materials" (basically propaganda) to distribute to schools. The educational materials basically teach kids all hunting, fishing, eating, wearing, or medical experimenting on animals is wrong.

The first thing I thought when I read about the HSUS being involved in the Katrina rescue was man, they are going to love this high profile fundraiser, it'll be a goldmine for them.

Then I come across this FR thread today: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1603362/posts

since the Canadians just about destroyed the cod through overfishing..they now feel they can do the same to the seals

Scuuse me, but I believe they are OUR cod and OUR seals and
I didn't think we had yet reached the point where we have to
ask our neighbours to the South what we can or can't do to ,or
with, OUR stuff.

It was very odd up here. I had come across a few dogs supposedly from Katrina rescues, listed by our local shelter, who were waiting a certain time period and would then be available for adoption. In fact we have a small farm and room so I had chosen two in particular to consider adopting. They had pictures and small descriptions.

I went back after the time period was over and all the files related to Katrina were gone. I contacted them but no one knew anything about these dogs, who had supposedly been shipped all the way up here to Seattle to the Humane Society, for eventual adoption.

Hmmm.

I'd like to know more about that.

Were you working with the local Humane Society or the national group to adopt these animals?

There's a lot of confusion about the two separate organizations -- many local groups are called the HS of (name of county, town)and these are funded solely by local donations, while the national organization is the HSUS.

Many unsuspecting people send the national HSUS money thinking they are helping the animals in shelters -- money that could be going to local shelters, but instead one red dime doesn't reach the local shelters.

Several years ago the HSUS president and several others were in mucho trouble, sued by the Canadian HS for diverting funds from that organization, and the HSUS President in trouble with the IRS.

Paul Irwin, then president of the HSUS, in addition to a salary that exceeds that of the president of the U.S. (six figure), and at least one multi million dollar weekend home, with lots of other bonuses and perks, caught the attention of the press, the IRS, etc.

Remember Jim and Tammy Faye Baker, the evangelists? Well, the HSUS makes them look like amateurs.

Don't take my word for it, it is all documented, stories were printed in all the major newspapers.

Oh, and I forgot to add, in addition to spending all those millions on salaries, bonuses, etc., they also spend a lot for lobbyists, in an attempt to have laws passed that meet their mission -- ending using animals for food, clothing, medical research, etc. They spend a lot to end the legal activity (hunting) and will, no doubt, eventually try to outlaw fishing.

From your post, I'm just wondering if the HSUS pulled a major DUMP of domestic animals, for fundraising purposes, you know, dumped them on the already overburdened local shelters without the financial backup in their quest to raise more dollars.

Bet you they made a killing off of Katrina :)

It's a cinch for red tide too.

BTW, vegetarianism is more than an option for most Hindus ~ there's simply nothing else they can afford to eat.

India also has a very hot pepper plant that can make Mexicans blush. I ate them stir-fried with noodles and my ass won't forget that experience. Like the ones in Thailand.

If they're going to harvest a bunch of seals, how about processing their meat? I ate bear steaks and like it. How about fillet of seal? Toss in a few baked potatoes and fry up some red peppers and make a big spanking salad with freshly baked bread with butter and honey.

And all your rowdy friends will come over to eat it up and leave a heaping mess.

this is the website.

They had, on the main page, a link for Katrina rescues, and when I chose it they had dogs with pics and brief descriptions of them. It said they would be available after a certain time period of waiting was over. I even posted them here, in fact, on a thread about dogs and Katrina.

I didn't pursue either of the two dogs I had liked because I was waiting to check back after the waiting period was over.

Later I could find nothing on the site listing Katrina animals anymore at all.

I checked out the link you sent and this local shelter is strictly local. They make it CLEAR on the site they are not affiliated with the HSUS, which is good.

My guess is the HSUS used local shelters from across the country to hold the displaced animals from Katrina, since the HSUS has NO shelter, while the HSUS spokespersons cried on TV to send them donations to take care of these animals. Wonder how much of the money raised from Katrina got funneled back to the local shelters that actually took on the extra burden and costs? I bet very little.

It could be the animals they housed were reunited with their owners.

I always encourage folks to send money to these local shelters because, in most cases, they are struggling on a shoestring budget. They are on the front lines trying to end animal abuse/neglect, and in rounding up and adopting out strays.

It's a shame all these huge rich animal rights groups don't contribute something to help these local volunteers out.
