Canada's annual seal hunt, the focus of a major protest effort by animal activists, will start on Saturday and could last longer than usual because the ice floes on which the seals gather are in poor condition, officials said on Thursday.

Canada says a total of 325,000 harp seal pups can be shot or clubbed to death this year. The first stage of the hunt, which takes place on ice in the Gulf of St. Lawrence on Canada's East Coast, will account for just over 90,000 animals.

Activists, who say the killing is cruel and unnecessary, say they will film the proceedings. The hunt officially starts at 6 a.m. on Saturday.

It's been going on for a few hundred years....NOT stopped by the wild-eyed seal lovers.
They have SUCH voice in the media and legislature. Why haven't they STOPPED this by now?

It's really only a SLAUGHTER because they are cute little seal cubs. If they were not so cute or so young, no one would care.

Fish, dolphin, shellfish, cattle, chickens, lambs, mink, chinchilla, snakes, silkworms, whales, whatever, are SLAUGHTERED every minute of every day and there is no outcry of "SLAUGHTER!!!"

Sorry, but the over-reaction to THESE particular creatures of God makes so little sense in the larger vision of all the thousands-of-years, planet-wide, unrelenting, consistent slaughtering of live creatures for food and clothing. God made us meat-eaters, especially those in cold climates where vegetarianism is only a dream.

Hindus are the ONLY culture in God's existence that are vegetarians. And not all Hindus are vegetarians. And they are so NOT because of any altruism towards animals. They mistreat their animals with impunity....they just don't EAT them.

This isn't directed just at you either, sir, and it's no condemnation of you or your ideas. It's also directed at those who would mourn ONE group of slaughtered creatures, while NOT all groups. I just happen to think that the sentiment is misdirected.

Don't kid yourselves people, those cute lil seal cubs can bite the living crap out of you if you get too close, as reported in 'Hello Magazine' on Paul and Heather McCartney's recent celebrity trip to Canada:
