WAUKEGAN — A cat saved his disabled owner's life during a fire in his home this week.

John Campbell, 37, who is disabled, sleeps in a hospital bed and walks with a cane, was awakened before dawn Wednesday by his 6-year-old cat, Pepper.

"He was jumping up and down on me at 4 in the morning," Campbell said. "I tossed him off three or four times. He started walking all over my face til I got up. When I did, I could smell smoke. I saw flames in the back of my house."

Campbell grabbed Pepper and some clothes and fled his home at 609 N. Chestnut St.

"I ran out the door half naked, put him in my truck and got over to my neighbor's house."

John Campbell with his cat Pepper, a male, in front of Campbell's house on Chestnut Street in Waukegan. He said Pepper woke him up during a fire in the house and saved his life.

I am not a cat lover, but Pepper gets a thumbs up for this one.

Pepper was looking out for Pepper. My cat, Bob, woke me up at 4 a.m. also, he wanted in so he could eat some of his free food. I suppose if the house had happened to be on fire, I would be telling people he saved my life. LOL

Every cat knows where your bladder is located.

A nine pound cat can concentrate 300 pounds of force into one paw.

Lots of shrimp treats for Pepper! Being a cat, he may have been more concerned with his own safety than with that of his owner's, but who cares? He got the job done just the same.

My black cat gives me that same stare when she is demanding something that I have to figure out. She's insistent and determined.

His cat looks like a 'Havana Brown'. The breed is well known for being a PITA, very vocal and annoying. We've with one for 17 years now. Ours know that her claws make a 'click-click' on the wood floor and so paces at 5am when she wants to go outside to pee on everything.

Translation from a long-time slave to cats (32 years and counting): "Wake up and save my ass, you stupid human!!"

And then, outside, watching the house burn: "The food! The food! Go back and rescue the food!"
