Drug test subject 'looks like elephant man' says girlfriend

(Filed: 15/03/2006)

The girlfriend of a man fighting for life after taking part in a pharmaceuticals trial has said the drugs he was given have left him looking "like the Elephant Man".

Myfanwy Marshall

Myfanwy Marshall, 35, said her boyfriend, a 28-year-old British man who had taken part in drug trials before without adverse side effects, felt ill 80 or 90 minutes after being given the drug on Monday.

He is now in the intensive care unit at at Northwick Park hospital in north-west London.

Five other men were also admitted to the intensive care unit at Northwick Park from an independent medical research unit on the hospital campus after taking part in the trial.

They had reacted badly to the drug, which is to treat chronic inflammatory conditions and leukaemia.

Miss Marshall said of her boyfriend: "He is like a shell of who he is and this machine is pumping out his lungs.

"His chest is puffed out. He is already a big kind of guy but his face is out here, like Elephant Man, it's completely puffed.

She added: "They haven't got a cure. This is not leukaemia. This is a drug they have never tested on humans before so they don't know what they are dealing with. It's completely messed up their vital organs."

I'll pay more attention to warning labels from now on.

"Do not take with alcohol" might not be a mere suggestion, as I had supposed.

I saw the original article last night. This is really a horrible situation. All the volunteers reacted badly, was the drug contaminated with something else?

I don't know what Britain's drug testing programs are like, but maybe our FDA ain't so bad?

Prayers for the volunteers.

Yeah. Those jerks should have tried it on humans before trying it on her boyfriend.

Wouldn't you hate to be the attorney that drafted that "no liability" contract for those VOLUNTEERS. I sure hope its solid.

She's pretty cute, and I think she'll be available pretty soon.

British man who had taken part in drug trials before...

I hope he recovers, but not the greatest hobby if you ask me.

Better than being one of these poor volunteers. I sure hope they recover.

I am not familiar with the drug testing system in the UK,but US trials must be done on all kinds of animals before clinical trials can be done on humans here.

Oddly, you never hear of this happening to the PETA freaks who are so rabidly against animal testing. Guess they don't volunteer for drug tests themselves, eh?

As long as you're honest, it's OK, besides I thought it was a great line!

I guess that the name "Myfanwy" is of Welsh origin, but how is it pronounced?
