(Staph) Infection Is Growing in Scope, Resistance

A virulent staph germ once largely confined to hospitals is emerging in jails, gyms and schools.

It all began with what looked like a spider bite on Eileen Moore's left thigh. Nothing to worry about, she figured.

Within 24 hours, the "bite" became a 6-inch welt with a bubble of pus that eventually ripened into a black wound. Over the next few months, scabs dotted her face. A hangnail caused her middle finger to bloat like a sausage. Her pierced ears oozed pus.

The cause of Moore's ordeal was a bacterium known as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, which in its most severe form can turn into a fatal flesh-destroying scourge.

We didn't have these problems when I was a kid.

Staph is serious. My daughter almost died from it.

Something else to keep the mothers of America awake at night.

I caught MRSA from a patient. Septra and Doxicycline took it out in 10 days after I had most of the incapsulated infection surgically removed..The capsule looked like a sputnik. Doc said he had never seen anything like it.

Wow! You've got my attention! My mom and I were just discussing this the other day. She was concerned that she had MRSA. (she had a triple bypass on Feb 14th) Tonight I got a call that she had to go to the ER and they think she has pneumonia.

This afternoon my son came to me with a 1/2" welt with a tiny pus pocket in the middle. I popped the pocket, washed it with some antibacterial soap, applied a hot rag for 15 minutes, and sent him on his way assuming that it's just a bad spider bite. No biggie.

Right before bed the welt was 1" in diameter, the pus pocket was back and he was complaining non-stop about the pain. I gave him some Tylenol and Advil, re-popped and washed the pus pocket and applied some oatmeal spray to take out some of the discomfort. I also circled the edge of the welt so we have something realistic to go on, not "I *think* it's bigger".

I was bitten by a Brown Recluse back in 77. My mom was bitten by a Brown Recluse in 87. I had to go through a months of daily injections and she ended up loosing a considerable portion of the muscle and skin over her right shoulder blade. I remember her asking me to "pick off the scab and drain" her sore. I dug, cut with scissors and pulled out the blackened tissue. I kept asking her if it hurt and she said that she felt a bit of tugging and told me to quit farting around and do it. After about 15 minutes I had to stop because I started fainting. I told her that she really needed to go to the doctor for this one. She argued, so I had her feel her shoulder. She was a bit surprised when she slipped her middle finger in the hole up to the first knuckle. She hadn't felt a thing.

No. I don't take "little bug bites" for granted. I treat them, then observe the hell out of them until they're completely healed.
