CA: GOP's activists accept a deal

No longer fighting his endorsement, Republican conservative activists will settle for airing their opposition to Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's bond, budget and minimum-wage proposals and raise questions about his judicial appointments at the upcoming GOP state convention.

The conservative California Republican Assembly had been pushing the party to drop its endorsement of Schwarzenegger over his appointment of longtime Democratic stalwart Susan Kennedy as his chief of staff.

CRA President Mike Spence said his group still wants Kennedy to resign. But CRA board members voted over the weekend to "suspend" the move to pull the endorsement, in part because state Sen. Tom McClintock, R-Thousand Oaks, asked them to, and in part because state party officials promised them an opportunity at the convention "to have a free and fair debate over those four subjects," Spence said Tuesday.

California Republican Party Chairman Duf Sundheim confirmed that arrangement, which he said was approved by the governor's re-election campaign.

"I think it's great," Sundheim said, adding that it took "a lot of listening, making sure everybody understood where everybody else was coming from."

CRA activists are prepared to rip Schwarzenegger over what the group sees as his straying from Republican orthodoxy by supporting a $1 minimum-wage hike, by calling for $68 billion in bond financing for his infrastructure plan, by failing to balance the state budget and by appointing a high percentage of Democrats as judges.

Schwarzenegger's campaign spokesman, Rob Stutzman, said he has no problem with the CRA getting a chance to voice its concerns at the San Jose convention.

"Vigorous debate should be encouraged," Stutzman said.

Spence said the CRA is mostly opposed to Kennedy because "we think there are qualified Republicans" for her job.

Democratic consultant Roger Salazar said he was "not surprised" the CRA and the Republicans reached an accommodation because they both need Schwarzenegger to hold the Governor's Office, and that without him "they become irrelevant."

The fight for relevancy from the liberal perspective.

For those from Rio Linda or the CRP, Salazar means that the CRP is revelant as long as they front a liberal. If the CRP should support a conservative, the CRP would no longer be relevant. Love that liberal thinking.

If Arnold loses the endorsement then they can't funnel money through the CRP. That is what the fight is about. The California Republican party is just a money laundering conduit for the weathly doners who dont have to worry about getting found out until after the election.

The new CRP motto "Just shut up and vote"

Sen. Tom McClintock, R-Thousand Oaks, asked them to

Too bad his FR extremists won't listen. Or are they Pelosi's extremists?
