China: We invented golf
News.com.au ^ | February 14, 2006 | correspondents in Hong Kong

For education and discussion only. Not for commercial use.

ANCIENT paintings allegedly proving the Chinese invented the game of golf 1000 years ago are to go on display in Hong Kong.

The pictures from the 13th and 14th centuries show Chinese noblemen hitting balls into holes with clubs that look remarkably similar to modern golf clubs.

The paintings will go on display in an exhibition titled Ancient Chinese Pastimes in Hong Kong's Heritage Museum from March to June, the South China Morning Post reported.

Golf is widely believed to have been invented by the Scots in the 15th century but some Chinese historians argue that the game was being played in China by the year 945.

They point to evidence of a game called "chuiwan" - "chui" meaning to hit and "wan" meaning ball - and say the game was taken to Europe by Mongolian travellers.

Chief curator of the Hong Kong museum Tom Ming said: "The game shown in these drawings is very similar to modern day golf. (This is) very strong evidence that we invented the game."

Absolutely correct. 3000 yrs ago, China was the most civilized, prosperous nation in the world. Once the kings became isolationist, Europe/America with their free movement of information surpassed them.

You're original post said nothing about the Chinese government being our ENEMY. Using the racist language implied all Chinese. In fact, that term can easily be used for your Korean wife.

I wish the Chinese, Irish, Scottish, Italians, etc. were treated as well as you say. Why were laws passed just the Chinese during and after the gold rush? Also, Denver used to have a Chinatown. It doesn't exist anymore since it was burned down by a few "white-hooded" fellows.

I love this country, but I know that race relations/problems have been a part of this country for centuries.

Well said. That guy should be ashamed of himself, but instead, we have to be ashamed that he remains here on FR and feeds the enemy within with all the vile hatred they seek.

The USA has been at war with England, Spain, Mexico, Germany, Italy. Odds are pretty high that using his logic, his ancestors should have been killed by America. Wonder how he feels about that?

You can keep trying the illogic of attacking my wife and attempting to place YESTERDAY into TODAY'S discussion... but it just proves that you have no leg to stand on with your argument. Like I said, KOREANS are NOT Chinese. But, maybe you don't understand that ALL Asians are not the same as all OTHER Asians?

China is our enemy. The Chinese people AGREE with that statement for the most part, I'd guess. It may be because they believe their own government's propaganda, of course, but whether they believe it legitimately because of own own "aggression" (which does not exist) or they believe it because of their government's propaganda, the FACT remains that they ARE our enemy.

And if we end up at war with China it would be SMART if our own government keeps an eye on people in this country KNOWN to have Chinese ancestry, whether they are naturalized citizens or NOT.

I feel this way about Muslims today and I would feel this way about Chinese in the future if we go to war with them.

If YOU are a Chinese national that became a citizen I think YOU should be looked at to be SURE of your loyalties if we go to war with China.

Sorry, but staying alive TRUMPS certain liberties during time of war. Anyone who does not believe this not only knows nothing of history but does not deserve that security (to rip off Franklin).

We have ALWAYS gone right back to a purer observance of civil liberties after a war is finished, but during a war only a FOOL would advocate peace time practices. The trick is which lines to move, which to cross and which to obliterate and that is where democracy and the rule of law comes in.

Don't be an enemy supporting simpleton.

With all do respect, you need to lighten up a bit.

Funny you use the word respect for what he said showed none whatsoever.

We are NOT talking about blacks, who were in fact persecuted in this country. The "N" word is a powerful symbol of that persecution. We are talking about the Chinese, who have received nothing but (well-deserved) benefits from this country, just as the English, Irish, Scottish, Italians etc etc. Call me a Limey or a Mick; I couldn't care less.

Calling someone a m!ck, l!mey or p0loc is just as disrespectful as calling someone a ch!nk or a Sp!c. Even if you believe it isn't, none of these words should be used on this website to describe your hatred for others. What he said is every bit as disrespectful to all Asians just as the N word is disrespectful to all blacks. If you aren't intelligent enough to use other words than ones created out of hate and bigotry then you need not post on this forum for we are here for debating the news, not for spreading hate for other nationalities.

If you believe I should lighten up then why was his post deleted. I have known many here who were banned for saying something "bad" about Bush, yet if most had read his post they'd be disgusted he is still allowed on this site to continue to spread his hateful remarks before the admins are able to delete them and let him carry on. It's a gross double-standard.

I know that my best friend who is Korean has lived his whole life (yesterday and today) being attacked and hurt with that word. If you don't think it should hurt Koreans then why don't you call your wife that name and see if she's not hurt by it.

I see by your profile that you are unapologetic so I won't waste my time trying to make you understand that what you said would be grounds on any site to be banned. Yet here you remain and it supports the Dummies claim that this is a racist website.

Perhaps if you would have called Bush a similar name then maybe you wouldn't be allowed here yet you only degraded a whole Asian community so I guess that is O.K. on FreeRepublic now-a-days.

I suspect this is based on the Caucasian mummies found in China.

The mummies were dressed in fabric identified as "plaid" and from there, the Chinese have made an amazing quantum leap of [deranged] logic that since ancient plaid was found in China, golf must have therefore been born there as well since the two often are found together.

[it's all I can figger and the last bit I'm just makin' up as I go along]....;D

There won't be a difference if all Asians are to be suspected, as you have claimed in your earlier post.

And you never know if your wife is a spy from China. What, beacuse she speaks Korean? :)

You think taht China only uses spies from China or Chinese spies only speak Chinese? :)

They can easily be a Korean wife of a dumbass white boy in the US, like yourself.

If there is an internment camp, it'd be applied to all Asians. After all, if there is a war between US and China, you can bet that North Korea will invade the South at the same time, which means, Korean spies, i.e. YOUR WIFE.

It's funny how on FR, especially, the most vile racist against Asians are ones that married them.

So has most Asians - if you grow up in the US in just about any junior high/high school as an Asian, then you have been called "g00k, ch!nk, etc. etc". Apparently FR these days are like junior high and consists of junior high logic.

And this China is our enemy thing has nothing to do with this original post. The post is about some 13th/14th century paintings depicting what looks like golf. There are also paintings from the past of a soccer like sport (and has been well documented, and that sport was mostly played by WOMEN in the emperor's court, by the way). Has nothing to do with inventnig MODERN soccer and golf games, just that in China at the time there was a sport similar to the rules of golf. But boy, that is enough to get these people off.

I guess they're the ones with the inferiority complex, if they get all riled up by a couple of 13th century paintings.

The original news just says that a couple of paintings shows what look like "golf", but doesn't say it invented golf (some museum curator claimed it, but it's not a fact or a historical verifiable thing). But for whatever reason, it got all riled up and brought into the mummies found in China for whatever reason. Note, the original news, even the curator did not say that the golf came from China to the Europeans.

They want credit for golf? I could see them taking credit for having people live in a home the size of the hole a golf ball goes into, but golf?

And this China is our enemy thing has nothing to do with this original post.

If you would have seen his deleted post it had nothing to do with China being our enemy. He blatantly called Chinese people that word twice in a rant that had nothing to do with his subsequent defense.

I would have to say nice try for him to turn it around by claiming it's o.k. for him to say that because his wife is Korean but then he goes on to say that Koreans are not "that word". Ignorance is always proven when words are put in print and I refused to repost his original comment for I knew it would be deleted. Perhaps I should have posted it with the words censored but I didn't and now he is spinning it to claim he was only talking about Chinese people who wish to kill him.

Excuse me while I LMAO.

You are laughable. Sad, but laughable. I checked out your blog...it's bad. The lights should be turned out.

I noticed all of your posts here attract no more than 5 or 6 replies. Get the hint yet?

"I am agaisnt the ENEMIES of the USA. YOU want to coddle them. Nice going. "

Let's see what you proposed -
1. Let's lock up any Asians that you don't trust and put them into internment camps.
2. You actually defended WWII internment camps without knowing what they are.

WWI internment camps, particularly the one against Japanese Americans, has far more to do with GREED by the local rednecks in California than national security. Japanese Americans did well in California, some owned lots of land. They confiscated their land without compensation, then arrested them without due process and put them into internment camps. Some elderly folks never made it out of there alive.

Every historian agreed that it was a gross violation of their Constitutional rights - in fact, defending something likethat would be like defending a totalitarian regime, which apparently you are supporting in your post.

Hence, who is the real enemy of the US? Who's against freedom? You are.

It's one thing to detain someone that you have evidenceagainst, it's quite another to detain a whole group of people just because of their race. Wasn't there a guy named Adolf Hitler that did the same to a group of people in WWII??

Like I said, your wife can be an enemy spy of the US and you wouldn't even know it. You do realize that Chinese spies aren't going tob e just ethnic Chinese folks, right? (Which is probably why the FBI counterintelligence have been looking at the WRONG folks all these years -- their top spies are probably going to be like Russian spies, which focused on assets that are willing to sell their loyalties for CASH, instead of ethnic loyalties). Oh yeah, using a person froma country that is deemed to be "ally" of the US as a spy is basic intelligence 101. Hence, Koreans, and Japanese in the US are just as suceptible to being spies for the CCP - after all, lots of people in China can look a lot like Koreans and Japanese.

And your claim on using nukes are about the most stupid comments ever -- a pre-emptive nuclear strikes against another country would invite other nuclear powers to do the same, to us. Russians are not going to stand idly by if that were to happen - oh yeah, the prevailing wind conditions would send the fallouts to Russia AND back at the US. It just shows how delusional you are to even talk about a massive pre-emptive strike.
