It is still "very, very, very difficult" for homosexual US actors to be open about their sexuality, he said.
"The film industry is very old fashioned in California," he said at the Berlin Film Festival, where he received a lifetime achievement award.
The British star of The Lord of the Rings said Oscar-nominated cowboy love story Brokeback Mountain may open the door to more films about homosexuality.
But the industry still had rigid ideas about leading men, he told reporters.
"It is very, very, very difficult for an American actor who wants a film career to be open about his sexuality. And even more difficult for a woman if she's lesbian.
"It's very distressing to me that that should be the case.

It's hard to imagine what world you'd have to come from for Hollywood to be "gay unfriendly". Seems to me they've been cozying up to the gays and lesbians for quite a long time.

Are they mad because Bareback Mountin did not cast real gays for the lead role?
To: rightwingintelligentsia
It's far more Christian-unfriendly than gay-unfriendly.

Hey Ian, as soon as I'm done shoveling myself out of this blizzard, I'm going to make every effort to be distressed too. |

Why should your sexuality be foisted on us? Because it's all about you, all the time? Yawn.

Who does this fool think he is kidding.Hollywood stars are in front of a camera telling about their drug, alcohol, depression and every other Oprah issue that they think will garner them sympathy and attention.
If they are reticent to "come out" it is only because they realize that the bulk of the public doesn`t approve of having deviant behavior shoved at them, and doing so would hurt their income earning potential.

I heard one homosexual scholar on television describe most gays as "narcissistic"--focused on themselves and constantly seeking attention.

And that's his real gripe. They will not be happy until everyone is what they are. It's the free love of the 21st century.

Exactly..
Nearly all arthouse dramas or bigger budget comedies have a gratuitous homosexual angle.

What does he mean "may open the door to more films about homosexuality?" I'm sure studios are packing in gay scripts now like they're were the only kind ever written.
Could he please direct us to gay unfriendly Hollywood. If it's there, I'll gladly buy their products.
In semi related news, TV is working on a new sitcom for Ellen DeGeneres, as the last one was a smashing success. /sarcasm.
